baby monitor and older kids

If you have an older child, what are you doing about the baby monitor situation? We decided to try to not spend the money for a brand new monitor and just re-use the one we have now, but that means we would have to take it out of our 3 1/2 year old's room. We have a very small house, so I really feel that if she needed us we'd most likely hear her, or she would just come into our room, but it makes me a little nervous not to have her on monitor. What's everyone else doing? Do you think 3 1/2 is old enough to be "unmonitored"?

Re: baby monitor and older kids

  • We still use one for my 4 year old, but she's in the same room as her 21 month old sister. We did use one in her room before, though. We sleep with a fan on, and DD NEVER gets out of her bed at night, so I just didn't feel comfortable not having a monitor in her room. If your DD doesn't get up and roam the house, and will yell loud enough for you to hear, I think 3.5 is old enough.

  • We haven't used a baby monitor since DS1 was 12 months old!!! I cannot stand baby moniters. With DS1, I bought it because I thought it was the thing to do being a first time mom. I woke up with every single little noise from that thing! It sucked! I threw the damn thing away and didn't use it at all with DS2 and certainly will not buy one for DS3. Our house is small and we normally keep baby in a bassinet in our room for the first six months anyway. Did I mention I cannot stand baby moniters?

What are you monitering your 3 1/2 year old for? I mean, what is it that you are worried about with her?

We haven't used a baby monitor for my son since he was about a year old.

So...the old one is going to be in the nursery for DD.

We live in a 3 story house (condo with a finished basement) and we haven't used a monitor for the last 1 year or so (DS is 2.5)....so yes, I think 3 1/2 will be fine to go without a monitor.

This is exactly how I feel. DD hasn't had one in her room in years now. We still have the one from then but for now we're all in the basement together so we'll probably only use it if we're outside in the backyard, garage, or at night when we stay up after the girls go to bed.

Same here.  3.5 years is old enough that she can call you or come get you if she needs anything.

  • I'll be the odd one out- DD is 3 and we still use a monitor.  Although we have a little different situation in that we have to come and get her as soon as she wakes up from her nap or in the morning otherwise she twirls her hair and pulls it out.

We just bought a second monitor, we use the Sony BabyCall, which is only around $40 so it wasn't a big deal for us to get a second one.

  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate the feedback. DD is comfortable getting up and walking into our room if she needs us, even at night, so I'm sure she'll be fine. Not sure what I'm afraid of taking the monitor out of her room...not to mention that the nursery is just across the hall, so if she yelled for us I'm sure we'd hear it through the monitor anyway.
