Toddlers: 24 Months+

Reasons for a toddler bed...

Is there any reason to move a kid out of his crib if he's not climbing out or you're not expecting another child who needs it?  I'm just wondering because it seems that most people on here and our friends have all moved their kids into a bed of some sort by their 2nd birthday.  My DS will be 2 in September and he sleeps really well in his crib and has never tried to climb out.  We don't even have it lowered all the way yet.  So, I guess I'm just wondering if there is any research or anything that states one way or another?  I am hoping to keep him in a crib as long as possible and just go to a full size bed when we do transition.

  • We tried putting DS in a big bed and he did good for a couple nights but then he kept asking to go back in his crib. So he has been in there ever since and i plan to keep it that way for awhile yet. I'm in no hurry either

This. If he's not climbing out and sleeps well in his crib, there's no reason to make the move. My DD will be 3 in September and we just moved her into a twin bed last week. The switch was a breeze, but I think it would have been a nightmare and a hassle a year ago.

  • My son is still happy in his crib. He doesnt try to climb out and sleeps well. I don't plan to move him out of it for a while yet. (I am thinking maybe January when he is 32 months) but i am flexible on that.

  • My first transitioned at 22 months because she wanted to sleep on the new sheets we bought for for her bed..

DD#2 transitioned at 24 months becausethe girls wanted to share a room and we said no until she went into the big girl bed.

DS, however, will be in a crib until, say kindergarten.

  • If he is fine then I wouldn't move him. DS wanted nothing to do with the crib at 19 months so off we went to get him a twin bed. He chose to sleep on the little couch in his room until the bed was in place, he just wouldn't go to sleep in the crib for anything in the world. Fine with us, since we were going to move him anyway... it just happened sooner than planned.

  • I wouldn't worry about "research", just do what you feel is best.

My dd is 26mos and still in her crib, probably will be for a few more months until we need it for dd2.

  • DS is 32.5 months and we're JUST NOW beginning to think about transitioning him.  He likes to lay in our bed, stays in one place at night (meaning at one end of the bed), he stays on a pillow, stays under a flat sheet and blanket that are tucked in at one end, and has said, when we ask him, that he'd like a "big bed."  He might just be saying it, but we're considering it.  The only reason we're thinking about it now, rather than closer to his 3rd b'day is that we're traveling at the end of October/beginning of November and it might be nice if he was able to be in a bed or on the floor for when we travel.  I think that you shouldn't change just b/c other people are doing it sooner or whatnot...  I think that if there is a risk - like climbing out repeatedly, then consider it, but not just because.  ;)

    Good luck!

  • DD is happy in her crib, and I have no intentions of switching her anytime soon.

Unless once we really get to potty training she needs to get up in the middle of the night to pee, then we'll probably have to.

  • if he's not climbing out then keep him in it. We needed DS's crib for DD, but I plan on keeping her in the crib until she tries to get out. we'll also convert it to a toddler bed before having to spend money on a twin bed to get more use out of the crib
