Glucose Test Advice

I'm going for my Glucose Test tomorrow morning. I was told by my doctor just eat a light breakfast. Any advice for the actual test? Flavor suggestions? So pretty much I go to the hospital, drink the sugary drink and then sit in the waiting room for an hour?  And then they take my blood? is that it?

Re: Glucose Test Advice

  • I was actually not told ahead of time when mine would be, so I didn't do anything different! I had a bagel for breakfast, (which I don't know if that was good or bad!)

But yes, basically, the lab gives you that sugary drink (kind of tasted like flat orange soda/pop to me), (and it might make you feel nauseous--it did to me), and then you sit for an hour in the waiting room, feeling sick. The lab took 3 vials of blood from me and then I left. Pretty simple.Bring a book or a magazine to read so you aren't bored from waiting.

I'm curious about my results (took it Monday) but they haven't gotten back to me yet so that might be a good sign!

  • The orange flavor isn't bad.  Also, watch the time yourself...don't let them take your blood early or late (they tried to take mine ten minutes early, which can screw up the results).  I thought it was no big deal, a big zero, even though I had heard it was unpleasant.  Good luck, I hope you will find it to be no big deal as well. :)

  • My glucose test is next week and its going to be 2 hours!  How come everyone else's is 1 hour?  It is in the morning, and they said nothing to eat or drink other than water after midnight the night before. Then they will take my blood when I get there, then I drink the drink, then they take it at hour 1 and hour 2.  Weird how this sounds like nobody elses.
  • It's not horrible - it's not the funnest thing you'll do all day but it's doable! I honestly didn't mind the fruit punch flavor. Make sure you have some water for when it's done, I drank a 20 oz as soon as I could, all that sugar made me thirsty. Good luck!
  • I didn't get a choice of flavors they had it ready for me last time. Mine is August 15th.  (I think it's funny how all our timings are so different) I'm Due 11/1 and I felt like I was really late for my A/S and now I feel like I am late for my Glucose test. They told me no OJ it can mess it up but other then that you should be OK.

  • I had my first one done early at 20 weeks (I have PCOS and its more common in women with PCOS). I just did it after my normal dr appt at 330pm.

I stayed away from carbs and anything sugary that day- I figure the drink in itself is enough to raise red flags, and I wanted to go in with as "blank a slate" as possible. I usually eat carbs during the day (its the only thing that holds off my heartburn), so that was the only major change I made. It worked for me- I passed with flying colors....I'll take it again at 28 weeks.

    GL!

  • I had mine this morning, and it wasn't that bad.  I didn't eat or drink anything (except water) after midnight last night.  The glucose drink tasted like orange hi-c from McDonalds.  I had to get it all down in 5 minutes and they let me watch the clock myself.  They took my blood exactly one hour later.  They let me wait in a regular room instead of the waiting room.  I laid down on the table and almost fell asleep!  I'm supposed to get a call on Monday with the results.  It wasn't so bad, but I really don't want to go back for another one.  Good luck!

  • They actually gave me the bottle at my last appt.  I've had it in my fridge since, waiting for my 26 week appt.  I'll drink it before I get to the lab and I'm going to try to time it so that I get my blood drawn right as I get there, then head upstairs to my regular appt.

  • Ugh...I have heard such horrible stories about the drink that I am really dreading this test.  Has anybody heard anything about eating 2 Hershey chocolate bars instead of the drink?  I always hear rumors that you can do this but haven't ever actually met anybody that did.

  • My doctor gives the drink to take home, so you can just show up at the lab in time for them to take your blood.  The labels says you can eat a light breakfast before.  I recommend bringing something to eat right after the test because the first time I did it, my blood sugar crashed and I felt really sick after the test.  I have since learned.  If you do it first thing in the morning it's not too bad.

  • I'll be going in on Saturday to do mine. I plan on having some toast with butter. Midwife said nothing that contained sugar, not even fruit. This is the second time i'll be taking it so i'll be bringing my ipod and playing angry birds while i wait.
  • I wouldn't eat any carbs for breakfast.  Stick to eggs or another protein food.

  • I don't know what time yours is scheduled, but I am going to go in early for mine. Last time, my test failed in the opposite direction, as in my sugar went down to 58 or something like that. I almost fainted afterward from low blood sugar, and the nurse brought me her peanut butter sandwich she had in her lunch, lol! I will definItely bring my own pb sandwich this time for after the test!! The drink wasn't so bad. I got the orange flavored one. The only bad part is that you have to pretty much chug it, and it is so sugary. Blech. GL on your test!
