I just got a summons for jury duty... There is a place to claim an exemption if "you have legal custody of a child or children younger than 15 years of age and service on the jury would require leaving the child or children without adequate supervision".
Now, I am a SAHM and do not have childcare for Kate, but I would never leave her without adequate supervision. I could feasibly make DH take off of work or pay for a drop in care place (?) or something though I certainly don't want to do that especially if I actually got selected for a jury and the trial went on for several days. I guess what I'm asking is, can I claim the exemption? The wording on this makes it sound like I can't claim the exemption unless I would be leaving my 2 year old alone at home to fend for herself. Of course, there's no phone number...
I'm pretty much an extreme rule follower if you can't tell.
Re: Talk to me about Jury Duty
The exemption is made exactly for situations like you, where you are the provider of child care. Whether you assert the exemption is up to you, however. So, if you want to serve on a jury (and as a criminal prosecutor I always encourage people to fill this duty so that we have intelligent people on the jury) then you can simply not claim your exemption.
I will let you know that very rarely in Texas do we have trials that exceed a few days.
Thank you! That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure.
I actually think it would be interesting to serve on a jury but it will have to wait until Kate is in school. DH doesn't have a ton of vacation time left and I'd rather we spent it together.
I would probably think about your DH's paycheck if you are selected and he needs to stay home with your LO. If he was summoned and selected, I'm pretty sure he would still get paid (at least at my job we are) but if he needs to stay home I'm almost positive he wouldn't be. So, can he afford to take a couple of days off? (Or, do you want him to use PTO or whatever he has?)
Just a thought.
