Feeding/Rocking to sleep...

We do this every.single.night. I know the books say it's wrong. I know the bumpies say it's wrong. But, it's oh-so-easy to get him to sleep with a warm bottle and some mommy/daddy snuggles while we rock. In fact, we've never had an issue with getting him to go to bed. Does anyone else break the rules by doing this too? Am I in big trouble with future Miles and bedtime with this current routine we have going?

Re: Feeding/Rocking to sleep...

  • We sometimes feed to sleep. We rock to sleep for naps but at night it usually just takes a bottle and holding her, no rocking.

It works for us so fvck it. She's not the CIO kind. It just works her up to the point where she spits up.

  • Wait...what?! We're NOT suppose to be doing this? I had no idea. We give L a warm bottle, I nurse her for about 30 minutes and then put her in her crib. She's usually drowsy but still awake. She has NEVER (::knocks on wood::) cried or protested. We kiss her and walk out and she usually falls asleep within 5 minutes. What are we suppose to be doing?

No, I think you have it right with putting her in her crib drowsy but awake. We knock Miles out cold by rocking him and feeding him until he's fast asleep before even attempting to put him in his crib.

  • We feed to sleep. She's sometimes awake when she goes in the crib, and goes to sleep fine by herself, so I don't see it as an issue right now.

Oh ok, whew. She usually falls asleep on the bewb but ALWAYS wakes up when we put her in her crib. I cant move without that kid waking up.

  • we do...sort of.  We give him a warm bottle & hold him and usually it's 50/50, he'll either fall asleep or after his bottle he's still awake & we just snuggle & lay down either when he's out or very very drowsy.  Bryson really isn't a CIO either so this works for us & makes everyone happy

  • I have always fed J right before putting him in the crib.  He used to fall asleep completely.  Now he wakes up while I am burping him.  It has always worked well and he hasn't usually protested.  We did do CIO for frequent night time wakings and that worked like a charm.  Now I get to snuggle my boy to sleep and enjoy a quiet 11 hours of sleep!!

  • Guilty. I don't know if Istill do it for him or me, but I hold him & pat his butt until he falls asleep. A while ago I put him down drowsy & he was fine, but then he started teething &i started rocking to sleep again. I told dh tonight that after this tooth pops through, I.m going back to putting him down drowsy. Sorryfor typos, i'm on my phone.

  • Whatever! I always feed and rock G. Sometimes he's out cold, sometimes he's just drowsy. Either way he always goes down easily and that is all the matters to me.

Most of the time I still nurse him to sleep. The rest of the time I just get lucky and he falls asleep on his own. I feel like we've gone backwards because I used to be able to put him in the crib awake but sleepy and he would go to sleep but now that he moves, he'll instantly roll over and either start trying to stand or sits up and yells.

Rules what rules lol! This is the way it is with K, I don't care it works and we are both happy plus I love our snuggles

  • If it works, it works. YOu may have to address it later, but you may not.

I would happily nurse M to sleep if it didnt' mean that I'd have to do it every 2 hours throughout the night. So we will re-Ferber once she's over her general anesthetic and MRI experience from monday. It's as much to remind her she can fall asleep on her own (she is absolutely capable, but wants to feed to sleep), adn to try and get longer stretches again, that we lost when we went on vacation.

  • If he can put himself back to sleep if he wakes at night, I would say it's not a problem.  I loved nursing DD to sleep, but when I did it, she would wake up constantly during the night, so we had to stop.

  • Even Ferber agrees that it's fine as long as it's not causing a sleep disturbance.

Whatever works! If that's working for you, go for it! The only way to get my LO to sleep in her crib is to put down awake and let her cry for a few minutes. Period, end of story. I wish I could snuggle her and feed her to sleep and put her in her crib, the crying breaks my heart! Every baby is different though.

  • Yep, we're doing it too.  But it's not the magic solution for us and we're having all kinds of sleep issues.  DH and I are finally coming to terms with having to try CIO.  We've suspected she's not a good candidate for it, but we won't know until we try.  She's teething something fierce right now, so we might try in a few days.  I'm not looking forward to it. . . . .

  • We pretty much do this.  We give him a bottle in his rocking chair in his room with the light out and sound machine on, and a binky ready for when the bottle was finished.  We used to make sure he was sound asleep before daring to attempt to move him to the crib, and pray really hard we wouldn't wake him in the move.  Now we put him down whether he's asleep or not.  Usually he's pretty much out, but still awake enough to know what's going on.

As has been said, I'd do this every night forever so long as he doesn't have sleep issues in the middle of the night.  We're working on breaking him of his middle-of-the-night bottle, and I think it's working (I'm honestly scared to think it or type it, lol, for fear of jinxing myself).  The past 3 nights I have heard him wake up at 12 and 3, but he has been able to put himself back to sleep.

  • From what I've read and experienced, it's only a problem if LO then needs you to do that every time he/she wakes up. We've been doing some Ferber when LO doesn't fall asleep right after nursing and for naps and it seems to be helping her stay asleep at night, etc. However, I still nurse her before bed and she often falls asleep or is teetering on the brink. This is totally fine with me. However, when she wakes up an hour later, I'm no longer going back in to nurse her. I'll either pat or do check-ins so that she's learning how to go back to sleep without nursing/rocking.

Hope that makes sense. If you're all getting enough sleep then it's NBD!

  • We give K a bottle before bed everynight. Sometimes she falls asleep, sometime she doesn't. She is funny when I put her down, she reaches up for her blanket then rolls to her side and gives a few pathetic cries and goes to sleep. No one likes sleeping alone so if she needs a few extra sunggles before bed, I don't mind :)

  • I nurse DS right before bed & he almost always falls asleep on the boob. When he is drowsy, but still awake, I can usually put him down, he gets comfortable & falls asleep on his own. I am perfectly fine with this & am not trying to "break the habit".

  • griffin usually falls asleep with his bedtime bottle and if he doesnt then we rock him to sleep (as we still do for naps ).  yea, it could be a bad habit to break later but its the easiest for us too.

DHs cousin still has to rock her 3 year old to bed (i think he may be turning 4 this year).  i CANNOT do that as griffin is already 22lbs and its killing my back.  ill work on that later though lol.

  • I do it because it is really the only time I get to spend with B Monday through Friday. So fvck the books. I'm cuddling with my baby.

If he doesn't fall asleep, and I've been up in his nursery with him rocking for a while, I'll put him down in his crib, give him the soothie and put on his music box. He always, always falls dead asleep within 5 minutes. So, since he can put himself to sleep just fine if needed, I'm rocking and feeding him to sleep all I want.
