Do your kids eat Wonder bread?

The white bread ...

DS was used to eating pretty healthy multi-grain bread until about 6 months ago. He goes to my in-laws about once a week and eats PB&J with wonderbread there. I used to think it was no big deal, but he's now refusing to eat any sandwiches unless it's on that. He's been sending his sandwiches home from preschool uneaten because he doesn't like the bread. I tried finding a similar "soft" bread that doesn't have all the crap that WB does, but I haven't had any luck. Part of me is ready to just eff it, and let him eat it -- after all, it's just freaking bread. But the other part of me wants to find something healthier because it's something that he's eating every single day. I'm sick of battling about yet one more thing with him.

This is one of those things that started as a "treat" at the grandparents that has backfired on me.

  • this is what we buy, it's soft and wheat. Great. Is this another "bad' thing I'm poisoning my kids with. :)

  • I grew up in WB; my dad worked there and Hostess Cakes for 51 years, just retire. We ate a lot of Home Pride.

  • Yes she does. And I'm pretty sure plenty of other kids do too or they would no longer sell it. They do make the fortified kid version, which is what I buy.
  • Make your own white bread, it'll taste better and be way healthier plus you can sneak in some whole wheat flower to make it a little bit healthier. If you aren't a baker, bread is pretty easy to make it just takes a few tries. If you cheat like me you can buy a bread machine, it's worth the invesment.
  • Bread is one of those things I'm pretty picky about because my girls eat it just about every day. Every slice is an opportunity for extra whole grains and nutrients (and conversely, extra HFCS and additives, if you don't read labels. WTF do they need to add HFCS to bread, anyway?!)

  • We are a Whole Wheat Bread household. Except for very rare occasions, my kids don't get white bread. That is what I grew up eating so why change?

WB is nasty.  when you squeeze it in a ball it stays like that.

We mostly bake our bread.  Esp now that I am again off dairy/soy.  I can't find any affordable commercial bread without soy.

that said my kids eat crap all the time.  I'm not sure I'd fight it.  I just think it's gross.

He eats plenty of crap, that's the thing. I don't mind junk ingredients in his cookies, but I'm trying to draw the line in his bread, especially since it's an everyday food.

  • Oroweat's Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat has been a great compromise in our house.

Our Target sells it.  It's soft like WB, but has a bit more substance health-wise (and no corn syrup, etc.)  :)

  • My thought process is like yours. If it's an everyday thing, I would try to find a way to sneak a healthier bread by him. I know that's easier said than done.
  • Ditto zenya. It just grosses me out...so spongy or something.

Is there any chance you can get your parents to give him something else so it's not a fight?

I guess I could try -- it's my in-laws, not my parents. They probably wouldn't care, but I feel bad because that's what they eat. I used to be of the mindset that getting spoiled at the grandparents never hurt anyone, but this hasn't worked out that way. Also, I don't really want to bring the fight to their house. That doesn't seem fair when they're doing us a favor.

    No, never.

This is one of the "American" foods that  I was never allowed to touch growing up, and I have passed that on to my own children. That said, Italians have lots of other bad food habits to make up for it :)

Word!  Bread is incredibly easy, esp if you have a stand mixer or a food processor.  You don't need a bread machine at all.  This is the recipe I use, the one labeled "At long last, the Bread Bible Pullman Loaf sandwich bread"

  • My kids eat sandwiches for lunch pretty much every day, so we stick with 100% whole wheat.  And I was kind of annoyed one day when the store was out of the brand I normally buy, and I accidentally got one with HFCS.  I don't make a big deal out of them getting junk ingredients when they're having a treat, but when it's the healthy part of the meal, I try a little harder to make it better for them.

My parents never bought white bread.  I felt a little deprived as a child, but now I can't stand it.  It's gummy and sticks to my teeth.  I don't buy processed cheese for the same reason.  It just tastes nasty to me.  Anyone remember that discussion?
