Because of my long commute, I will be away from my baby for 12 hours each day. I am excited to go back to work on Monday, but sad that we will be apart for so long. Can anyone relate?
I leave the house long before DD wakes, so I put her to bed at 8PM, then don't see her until 5:30PM the next day. I have a 3 hour round trip commute, plus an 8+ hour day working.
It makes you very aware to be engaged with your LO during those brief hours you get with them, ignoring as much as you can until they are in bed - chores, phone, email, etc. The commute has taken it's toll on me though, and we are moving in a few weeks to allow me more time with DD.
Hang in there. Those first weeks are tough, but once you get a rhythm, you will be ok.

yes - alot of moms here have long commutes, I can relate and others can too.
I would not count the hours away though - it just makes you unhappy. Count the hours you are with your LO and make the most of them.
That's the best advice! When DD was an infant, I used to break it down by hour, and how much it cost per hour, and how much I was REALLY earning on top of that, and it just broke my heart. Now I just count the hours I have with her and keep a budget so I don't worry about the money and things are great
Yes, I know what you mean. I'm only 10 hours, but I try not to think about it. It's hard with a long commute and a LO who goes to bed early. So I look forward to the weekends when we can spend more time together. Also, I know DD is happiest in the mornings when she wakes up and that's usually when I get to see her.
I worked 80 hour weeks until DS was 11 months old. Depending on the rotation, I would have a 30-hour shift every 3rd or 4th night, or a 6-hour ER shift after 10 hours in clinic once or twice a week. When DS was tiny, it wasn't too big of a deal because we could catch up on time together with night feedings and bedsharing.
