Questions re nursing pads...

ok I have 2 children that were formula fed, I am planning on trying to bf with this lo and in the very least will be pumping.

Do you really use breast pads? How many do you go through per day? Is this just dependant on the person?

I have a box now, but am wondering if this is something to stock up on?

  • I've never used them.  I leak on to my shirt sometimes at night, but otherwise I rarely leaked, even in the early days.  It's not a big deal to me that the oversized tshirt I sleep in gets some milk on it.  Some people use them a lot--it just depends, so I wouldn't stock up on them, just see if you need them.

  • I agree with PP.  I use them everyday just in case, but I don't use more than one pair a day.  In the very beginning I did have to change a couple of times, when my milk was regulating but that pretty much stropped 2 weeks pp.

  • I wouldn't stock up because you might have to try a few brands before you find one that you like. I like the lansinoh(sp?) brand. In the beginning when my milk came in I would have to change the pads a couple times a day.

  • I wear them everyday.  I wore them everyday for about 3 months with ds, only because my nipples were SO sore that I wanted to have something soft on them so they weren't rubbing on my bra.  I never leaked with him.  With dd I leaked some in the beginning and I probably do every few days.  For me, it only happens when I have my let down and dd is eating on the other side.  But I need them, for sure or I'd be wet.

  • I still use them and DS is 14 mos. Usually just a pair a day, even in the beginning. At first, I used reusable pads during the day and then Lansinoh pads at night. Now I just wear the Lansinoh pads at night, unless DS doesn't empty me completely in the morning and I feel myself getting engorged.

  • I went through pads like crazy. i leaked alot and had a great supply of milk. I would buy a couple of boxes of different brands, and go from there. and if it turns out you dont need them that much you can always return them.

  • Ditto PP about getting a box or so of different kinds. I used them for the first three months until my supply really regulated and I stopped leaking from the opposite breast when DS was eating. In the very beginning I leaked almost constantly. I mostly used cloth ones, but my mom snagged me a few boxes from the hospital she works at. I got some Lansinoh pads at my baby shower that were great too.

  • I leak like crazy.  My favorite is the Tommy Tippee.  They are great at being absorbent.  I only need one a day.
  • Everyone is different in terms of leaking, so I wouldn't stock up too much.  I don't remember how many I used per day, but I only needed them for the first six weeks or so.  I used the Lansinoh ones and I think I only needed 2-3 boxes total.

You may already know this, but I just wanted to say that in most cases, breastfeeding is much easier than pumping.  I only pumped occasionally and it was a lot of work.  I give tons of credit to the moms that pump exclusively.

  • I use them all day, every day. I forgot to wear them the other day at church and I was leaking like crazy, which made for a somewhat embarrassing experience. Plus, I've found that my nipples don't stick as much to them as they do to my bras. That can be kinda painful.

From reading previous posts, I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I was told that if you are going to wear them, then they need to be switched out with each feeding or pumping session to avoid mastitis. Obviously, many others only wear one pair a day so maybe that's not true...

  • I wear them too, if I don't I'm drenched in milk! Last night I woke up to a wet bra, sheet and pillow :(

I only got cloth ones before having DD and was given a few reusable by a friend,  thank god because i leaked through the fabric ones in a few min!!

I loved the Lanisoh soft and tender (or whatever they were called) ones in the beginning (6 weeks or so).  Then I migrated to using the Nuks (thinner) during the day and regular Lanisoh at night.  After I went back to work my daytime supply had regulated enough that I could use cloth to catch any random leaking during the day.  I still use the Lanisoh at night.  I'm cheap, though and will use them for more than one night when my supply isn't adjusting (DS can't make up his mind about sleeping through the night or waking up for one night feeding).

  • Once my milk came in, and I realized how quickly the box of disposibles was going to run out, I decided to go the economical thing and got some washable nurisng pads.  I got the NUK ones and like them (although they are also the only ones I had tried).

During the day, I only use one set of nursing pads.  They never become really wet, but from experience I know that if I don't use them I'll leak through my bra and shirt while I'm feeding on the opposite breast.  At night it's a different story.  I could NEVER go without nursing pads at night.  I would literally have milk soaking my nusring bra and running down my stomach (and this did happen the night my milk came in, lol.)  I often change my nursing pads at least once during the night b/c they become soaked and uncomfortable.
