Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

14 months old and still not talking !

My 3rd child , so different from the other 2!! to begin with my first are boys and 3rd is a girl .... My boys talked numerous words and where onto sentences by 15 months! My daughter now only says

-dadda

-mine

-mommy (sounds like money)

and that about sums it up! she understand EVERYTHING I say even when I say `can you put this in the garbage` and she does. She knows who everyone is so when i say `go see Skylar`she goes to her oldest brother. BUT anytime I ask her something she just grunts , She wont even seperate her lips to make a effort in saying words! am I over reacting or should she be a little more advanced then this !

Re: 14 months old and still not talking !

  • DS is 14 months old and only says mama and dadda, and 75% of the time, they aren't used in context.  He understands what I say and babbles alot.  I'll start worrying in a few months, not at 14.

  • My DS isn't really making many words, but understands everything we say too.  He has maybe five or six words, maybe.  I am not worried, If he still sounds like his at 2 I might be a little more concerned.

  • Overreacting. DS had about 3 words at 15 months. Now, two months later, he has probably 20.

  • DS is 14 1/2 months and says:

Dada (constantly, sometimes in context, and a lot of time not in context --walks around the house saying dadadadada....)
mom (only when he wants out of his crib)
    no (sounds like ooo)

Sometimes it sounds like he's saying words, but I'm pretty sure it's just babble.

  • Thanks for the support that im not alone . Most of my friends children are talking by this age and even 2 months younger! My boys talked well by this age too so im just going to assume they where a little more advanced then my daughter. Its not the problem that she is not talking its the fact she isnt saying the words most babies are by this age . She use to say cracker and up and nanight ect but now its stopped and she just wont do anything but grunt .
  • Does she otherwise communicate her needs well (by pointing, grunting, and other body language)?  Does she babble?  Assuming she's doing those things reasonably well, I wouldn't worry about it at all.  At 15mo, DD has no words (and 9 signs, only half of which she uses reliably).  I mean none - no mama or dada either.  But we're not worried because her receptive language skills are great ("go get your bunny and take it to daddy"), she communicates what she wants/needs with her body language very well (rarely frustrated at being unable to communicate something), and she's reasonably advanced in physical skills and fine motor coordination for her age.

So I'd look at the overall picture, not just this one thing.

  • She grunts for everything , Rarely pointing and gets frustrated alot because I dont understand what she wants- needs. Her brothers talk often for her though . My middle child we did sign language with and the health nurse said he was behind on his speech because he signs so we decided not to sign with my daughter and it has gotten us no where! atleast with signing we knew what he wanted . all I can do is keep trying and I guess she will get on the ball sooner or later .
  • Maybe at your next appt, ask your pedi. My DS is 17 months old and still doesn't say much, but he understands SO MUCH! My pedi's response was that right now it wasn't really a concern since he understands so much. My DS is also ahead in physical development, he has been walking since 9 months and seems to be ahead in all the physical development milestones, so she told us not to worry. She also told us that for a lot of kids there seems to be a language explosion between 18-24 months. I would just keep touching base with your pedi and keep trying to introduce her to language, some kids just take their time.

  • Liam is 15 months and has about 8-10 words he uses on a consistent basis.  When I told the pediatrician this at his 15 month appointment she seemed pleasantly surprised (she had only asked if he had at least one word aside from mama and dada).

I think your DD is perfectly normal and your other two boys are on the advanced side.  Boys typically develop  language at a slower rate than girls.

  • My daughter is a late talker (2nd child). At 15 months, she only had 3 real words and that was enough for the ped. We had her evaluated for speech therapy (after 18 month appt/10 words) and she qualified. Basically, we have to keep encouraging her to speak because she knows she can get what she wants without saying anything. She points, nods her head yes and no, her brother talks for her, etc. Just label everything, ask her to repeat words. We are teaching her some signs as well (more, eat, give me, all done).
