Moms of daughters-princesses

Am I the only one that can't stand the Disney Princesses?  I don't mind them as dolls, or kids dressing as them, but I hate when they are plastered all over everything.

I'm looking for a chair for her and that's all I'm finding.

Ick!

Re: Moms of daughters-princesses

  • What kind of chair? IKEA has some cute little-kid chairs that have no characters at all on them.

Cheapie beach chairs, however, don't seem to come in just colors. You have to choose whichever Disney or Nickelodeon character least makes you want to poke your own eyes out.

  • Totally agree! I am not a fan of characters on things in general. The only clothes I have with characters on them are the ones that were handed down to my daughter. I wanted to get an umbrella stroller at Wal-Mart, but wouldn't get it because they were all Disney princesses etc.
  • YES! I totally agree. We don't own princess anything. I caved and bought her Elmo pj's because she freaking loves him but that's the only real "character" we own anything of. I'm not a big fan of character anything outside of toys/movies - all the shoes, clothes, furniture are just NMS. Of course that doesn't mean it won't be DD's style in the next few years and that we won't wind up with our very own collection of Dora (or Cindarella) sneakers =)

  • Yeah I know what you mean. E has a couple nice chairs without princess stuff on it, and a cheap chair from TRU that has tinkerbell. Thankfully she doesn't know who Tink is, so I think I am safe for now.
  • Im just not into it. She loves her lttle princess books and purse. But im not raising her in a fantasy world where she thinks shes a princess. The whole thing makes me cringe. She is special, and we make her feel special because of who she is, not for something that is make believe.

  • i HATE all things pink and super girly and fluffy and princessy. i refuse to buy any of it until she asks for it. so far so good.

  • I wont get her anything until she asks.  Then we'll talk about how it's make believe, etc. My niece is obsessed and it started when she was about 2.5.  I think it's slightly inevitable, but we can do our best.

  • We don't buy things like chairs, tables, posters, and what not with Disney Princess' or any character, and the only clothing that I buy with characters on it are pajamas.  That being said I love the movies but I love all Disney movies.  One of the main reasons we don't buy the Princess stuff is because I think it is cheap and also I hate pink!

How interesting, I never realized the messages those movies could be sending. I am not into princess or character stuff, even though my mom tries to shove it down my throat. I also don't like shirts with cartoon characters or sayings on it such as, "I tried to be good, but I got bored" etc.

my 2 cents on the issue: I may not like them or the messages, but if DD gets into them I won't stop her either. As a young girl I loved the princesses, and like to use my imagination to pretend being a princess. If my mom would have tried to stop me, it would have drawn me in more. I am hoping that I can guide her and teach her the values I want her to have. We live in a world that sends a lot of messages everywhere (product packaging, billboards, books, magazines etc) and denying a child to one avenue seems a little silly to me.... If we really stopped and evaluated all messages that toys/ kids products sent, we'd have to put them in a bubble to avoid exposure to undesirable messages. Everything could have an adverse message if you really think about it....

  • have you tried something more traditional? Gummi Bear got an Amish rocker from her grandparents for her first birthday. I know there has to be some old-school crafters around here - try the flea market at the state fairgrounds if you get desperate for ideas (I think - it's been a while since I've been). The other would be try some of the smaller furniture stores - they might even have something that matches your decor.

Unless you're looking for something more disposable, then I'm no help

  • i think my kid has exactly one item with disney princesses on it- a little pink toy cellphone. and that is enough. luckily she seems a lot more interested in cats and dinosaurs at the moment.

  • Didn't you ask about the chairs the other day? Did you see the one I linked for you? It's girly, compact and doesn't have characters on it. I can link it again if needed.

Anyway, I'm not into the princesses for children too young to understand princesses. I have not bought Tegan anything with princesses on it, but my MIL has and we do use them, but not outside of the house. My aunt also made Tegan a patchwork quilt using some princess themed material and since it's a gift from the heart, Tegan does sleep with it quite often. I'm sure, as she gets older, it'll become one of her favorite blankets, mainly because of the princess material.

I grew up watching the Disney "princess" movies and I want Tegan to see them to as she gets older. I understand the "lessons" that some people feel the movies teach, but I watched at least one movie a day growing up and I certainly don't subscribe to any of those thoughts from the pic above.

  • What irks me is when people see you have a girl and immediately jump to calling her princess and asking why she's not dressed in pink! Maybe I want my daughter to be hardcore death rocker (not really) or at least choose her own path in life. It's not that I don't buy her pink clothes or go out of my way to be super gender neutral, but I don't feel like I need to push her into the princess mentality.

  • I don't have a daughter and I can't stand them either.  I am hoping that my future daughter won't be into them but if she is, I at least won't be the one to get her started and I will limit her exposure to them.

I had a girl in my K class last year who was way into Toy Story and Spiderman.  She wanted to be a police girl/cowgirl/karate girl when she grew up, haha.  She was my kinda kid!
