HELP: WHAT DOES A 17 Month Old Eat?

I have a friend coming for an 3 day visit with her 17 month old toddler. I only have a 5 week old, so I have absolutely no idea what a toddler eats. I am assuming I should have whole milk on hand ... and I know my friend has mentioned her daughter has no dietary restrictions now. What types of stuff should I have around the house for nutritious snacks ... is it stuff like fruits, yogurt, bread, graham crackers, cheerios, cheese? Also, help me on what types of things qualify as "meals" for 17 month old toddlers? TIA!!

I'd ask her mom, only because toddlers can be super picky....but yes, the things you have listed are all probably good choices.  For meals, DD has been eating what we eat since well before 17 mths (within reason; nothing spicy or anything like that).

  • My 12 mo eats whatever we're eating. I think what you listed is just fine for snacks.

  • Lots of fruit....my kids favorites are oranges, red grapes and bananas. Lunch meat, a low sodium variety and cheese is good for lunch. My kid loves yogurt too.

  • Some of DS's faves: all fruits and steamed veggies, cheese sticks, pb&j(although a lot of people don't do pb this early), pita an hummus, hard-boiled eggs, pancakes, French toast, waffles, yogurt, applesauce, cheerios and puffs. He eats whatever we eat at meals as long as it's not too spicy or too hard to chew (he's just getting his molars)

  • DS loves bananas, mandarin oranges, any of the Earth's best crackers, waffles, strawberries, mac and cheese, cheese cubes/.sticks, oatmeal, soy protein hot dogs.  Squash, cucumbers, green peas and strangely pickled beets lol.

  • PP's all have good suggestions -- my guess is that this toddler isn't picky since the mom didn't mention anything when you asked her. I would just plan on them eating whatever you guys are eating -- that's what my DS does.

However, I always have the following on hand for snacks: bananas, watermelon, applesauce, cheese sticks, yogurt, Goldfish crackers, Nutri-Grain bars, cereal I can put in his snack cup (usually Froot Loops).

  • Definitely ask your friend.  Some kids are picky, and some parents are particular on what is offered to their LO.  Your list of foods is likely fine.  My 17mo pretty much is offered whatever we are eating, unless it's too hard for him to pick up himself.  Most LOs at that age drink primarily whole milk.
