Cloth Diapering

Charlie's Soap, Detergent ?

CD newbie here, gettting ready to wash my first load...

I initially bought Charlie's Soap to use, given the great reviews. But then I started reading a lot about the horrible rash it's given some babies, and all the work that needs to be done to "clean" the washer of detergent residue. Now I'm questioning whether we should go with a different option.

Had anyone used Charlie's Soap with success? Do I really need to pre-clean my washer? Can I use CS for the diapers and my normal detergent (Tide F&C) for my other clothes or should I switch to CS altogether?

Should I just consider another soap entirely? Rockin Green was my second choice. I have a FL, HE machine.

I'm just very paranoid since DD has eczema and has never had diaper rash with disposibles (hard to believe, I know). DH is going to be hard to convince if the washing gets super complicated (beyond the normal rinse, wash, rinse and occasional soak) or if it actually gives DD rashes.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Charlie's Soap, Detergent ?

  • We started using Charlie's on all of our laundry about a month ago, although our baby isn't due for a month.  I have extremely sensitive skin, as well as a psoriasis, so I wanted to make sure whatever we used worked for me before testing on the kiddo.  So far, so good.  I've had no reaction to anything.  We didn't really "clean" our washer or anything, we just did one load of rags with the Charlie's first.  Hope this helps!

  • My DS never got rashes with it and I never did the preclean. I started using Tiny Bubbles just to try something new and I don't really notice a difference with either. Both work well for me. You'll never know about the rash until you try it on your LO unfortunately. Good luck!

  • We used separate detergent for clothes when we used Charlie's for diapers. Our diapers stunk so we quit charlie's. But, we didn't have a burn problem.

  • We used Charlie's with no problems (we switched to hoemmade for cost reasons)  DD has eczema  also but the detergent doesn't aggravate it.  We used it for clothes also.

DD gets the occasionally diaper rash but not related to detergent.  We change every two hours consistently but I think that's just part of using CDs for us.

We also started using it a few months before our daughter arrived and had no issues either before or since. I love Charlie's Soap!

  • We love Charlie's Soap and have been using it for over a year. I don't remember if I did the prewash, though for the washer or not. The thing with CS is that is has to clean away all the other soap residue left in your machine for other detergents- same with clothes. It'll take 2-3 washes of your clothes before you'll notice the difference Charlie's soap makes after all the other soap/fabric softener residies are gone. All we use with it is a cup of vinegar to help break down our hard water and as a disenfectant. (We don't use vinegar with the diapers except maybe once every two weeks because it can damage the PUL with a lot of use.) One thing I learned is you still have to use a whole scoop of CS with CDs (even though they aren't a large load) or they develop a stink. We really like it and aren't looking to change at all, plus we haven't had any detergent related rashes. GL!
