Potty Training / Sleep Question

I have an interesting potty training and sleep question.

My son has taken to potty training much easier than expected.  We've only been at this 2 weeks and he's stayed dry, even through the night, after just a few days of training.

The problem is - my child who used to sleep 11 hours through the night (he's 2 1/2), is now getting up an hour and a half earlier to go to the bathroom and won't go back to sleep.  What used to be 7:30 or sometimes 8 is now closer to 6 a.m.

We know that it's potty training that sparked this because all of these changes happened when he started being dry through the night.

And I'm fine that he's getting up to go potty, but he's losing an hour and a half or more of sleep everyday now, that he so badly needs.

Naptimes have become more difficult because he's over - tired, and he's a train-wreck when he gets up from them because he wakes up tired.

Any advice on how I can get a 2 1/2 year old to go back to sleep after he wakes to potty?

Re: Potty Training / Sleep Question

  • Is it possible for you or your DH to go in earlier, like 5am, take him to the bathroom and then put him back in bed? To accomplish this with out waking him, dont turn on any lights (maybe have a night light handy), dont talk to him (maybe whispers  if he's scared or unsure or not peeing) and carry him straight to the potty, sit him on it, wipe (do boys wipe at this age??? lol) then carry him back to bed. It may seem like a hassle but he'll only need to do this for a little while until he gets the hang of it and you'll save on diapers/pull ups!
