Pregnant after a Loss

I called dr today about swollen legs after flying.

Our flight was 2 1/2 hours from Miami today and I got up to walk around once and kept thinking I should get up again, but then the flight attendants were coming down the aisle again to clean up after passing out drinks, then we were told to sit and fasten seat belts because it was rather bumpy.  We were getting fairly close to landing, too, so I didn't get up.  My legs felt a bit weird the time I got up and especially weird as we were walking off.  My legs felt all tight and were swollen when I looked at them in the airport.  I called the doctor because I was getting paranoid about blood clots.  He told me to sit with my feet up as much as I can and drink plenty of fluids, and it should go down in the next day or so.  Our trip was really hot, and although I felt like I stayed hydrated, maybe I really wasn't.  I was so relieved to hear him say that it wasn't a blood clot issue.  He also said my Lovenox would protect me from that.  So, if you're going to be flying, make sure you stay very hydrated and walk around at least every hour!

  • That's a good reminder!  On Monday I have a 3 hour flight (2nd leg of my trip) to San Francisco.  I'm planning on wearing my compression socks despite the granny look!  I just hope I'm awake enough to remember to walk around!

ETA:  Glad you're doing okay !

  • It also helps to lift your heels up and down several times, kind of like your flexing your calves, if you can't get up and walk a lot.  Or in between getting up to walk.

  • Good advice, but like you said it's so hard sometimes, you can't get up 10 times, especially if there's turbulence or you're stuck in the middle or window seat.

I flew back and forth from CA to FL 3 times during this pregnancy, and I wore compression stockings, made a huge difference in how my legs felt and looked. They're a good idea on longer flights.

  • Swelling sucks!  My doctor suggested submerging yourself in a pool - that the water presure would be good for getting the swelling down.  I soaked my cankles in the bath tub for an hour last week and it really helped!  He did say that getting into a pool was best though.  Since you're in Miami hopefully you have access to a nice pool.  Hope you feel better soon.
