100+ year old rocker

So my Mom gifted DH and I a beautiful antique rocker.  My Great Grandfather built it and My Grandma was nursed in it, my Mother, me and potentially my baby.  It's fairly comfortable (rocks and is wood), but it's kind of creeky. Scratch that, SUPER creeky.  My Mom even commented on the noise...

So I'm torn.  Do I use this beautiful antique rocker that has so much meaning, or do I buy a new one that is more quiet and comfy.  I feel like it's comfortable... but when I sit in those cushy ones at BBB I melt... Note:  I have a history of a bad back (L4/L5 bulging disc).  With this chair I could put a cushion on it and use my lumbar support that's in my car.

Ridiculous PS::::::  this is the first time I've used the abbreviation DH.  I feel so much a part of the message board now!  :)

Re: 100+ year old rocker

  • I would feel inclined to use the older rocker, but maybe take it to someone who can service it to get rid of some of the creeks.  Or add some wd40 to the joints.  But with that much history, I would want to keep it going.  JMO

  • yeah, try to get the creeks out! I think that's really cool!

  • Have the old rocker serviced for the creaks and get yourself a new rocker and keep it where you will do more of your nursing. Put the old rocker in a pretty niche where everyone will see it and you might sit in it a few times. It is too old to be used heavily, anyways. Wouldn't your mother rather keep it in good shape as a family heirloom than to break it? You could make a really beautiful vignette with the rocker and an antique side table with lamp....

  • I would definitely see if a furniture repair place or an antiques person can get the creaks out.  I'd LOVE to have an antique rocker like that, but we don't have one in our family :-(

  • i agree with seeing if you can get the creeks out, and using that.

Now, with your back problem....you might want to look into a glider if the rocking chair gets too uncomfortable....but I'd at least give the chair  a try.

  • Sorry that this is not helpful at all, but it made me smile anyway...when I saw the title of your post I immediately thought of Mick Jagger.

  • When I was PG with DS, my mom gave me the rocker that her MIL gave to her (my grandmother). Like the one you have it has been used for generations and is mighty squeeky. I left it on our first floor, and put another rocking chair in DS's room. I was able to use it to calm DS but not worry about the noise at bedtime and naptimes. I recommend getting a cushion, or better yet go with your mom to pick out the fabirc and make one. That would make her feel more a part of it, and will show her that you care about it and do plan on using it to some degree.

  • We have a rocker that was my grandmother's. It is also wood and super squeeky. We ended up putting it in the living room and got a glider for DD's room. We still use the creaky rocker occasionally, but not all the time. DD actually liked the creaky sound and it would help lull her to sleep, odly enough, as it was driving me crazy. I'm so glad we have the glider though, it's much easier on those nights where I just needed a quiet, comfortable place to get DD sleepy. This is your call, and not much help, just my experience.
  • Thanks for the tips! I hadn't even thought of going to a furniture repair place. Since the creeks are from wood I figured it was unfixable. Great idea! Maybe I'll get a used glider if I need an alternate option. Well def keep it in the family. It is very special.

  • I would take it to a furniture restoration place and get it repaired.  It would be neat to use a rocker that has been in the family for generations.

If you happen to be in the MN metro I would love to share with you a great location to get it restored.  My FIL has had two chairs and a rocker restored by them all three have come out amazing.

Depending on the rockers build you could even have someone add some upholstery (sp) either cushions or add it directly to the chair to support your back.

Thank you so much for the offer of a rec. I wish I lived closer... We live in Scottsdale. I'll probably reach out to a few antiquers I know and check yelp. Thanks again!,

    hahahaha...

I have a rocker in my family that, while not quite antique, was used by my parents and grandparents. I'm planning on using it, but I'm definitely getting a cushion for it! I also like the idea of getting a cheapy glider for baby's room, and keeping the rocking chair in the main part of the house.
