breastshield size

How do you know if you have the right size?  I think the 24 mm SoftFit breastshields that come with my pump is two small.

Re: breastshield size

  • I was having pain when I was pumping- to the point that within 24 hours of pumping every 2 hours, I couldn't think about putting the pump back on. I went to see a LC, and they could tell by my nipple size that I needed a different size shield (21mm vs the standard 24mm). I think I was also getting some bruising around on my nipples/areolas, as well.  Basically, it was painful, and they said that pumping should never be painful like that.

I went through 4 different sizes of medela flanges and couldn't get any relief from the nipple pain. The Pumpin Pals don't have that sharp angle where the nipple goes through so it pulls more of the areola and not just the nipple. The suction is further back on a less sensitive area. They also allow you to sit back and relax, plus they work great with my hands free bra.

I was seriously on the verge of  quitting and bought them as a last resort. Now I am mad I didn't have them from the start, but so happy I found them before I quit pumping.Big Smile

i just looked this up. i think i might try them. the medela ones are fine for the most part, but i feel like i should be between the 27 and 36, but there isn't that option.

  • It looks like you could use either the large or XL, probably both.  I use the large in the morning for my first pump and the mediums the rest of the day. They really are much more comfortable, and after about 4 days, I started getting more milk.Smile
