Hand foot and mouth

is going around our daycare.  i thought we were in the clear, but i got called to pick DS1 up today b/c he has a blister on his tongue.  does anyone have any experience with this?  from what I've read, it seems like the fever and not feeling well come before the sores?  he has felt fine, but has a sore.  So, i'm guessing maybe it won't be too bad for him?

Re: Hand foot and mouth

  • We had it a few weeks ago and my 3 yr old had the fever and horrible sores that lasted a good week or more. It's awful ! He didn't sleep and barely ate we went through several popsicles. My 1 yr old got the fever for a few days then never got the sores, thank goodness. My DH and I never got it but my SIL ended up getting it from the boys about a week after they started having symtoms. (We thought we were out of the contagious stage).

Don't kiss on him too much, it's very contagious. Our pedi said it's pretty common in the summer months. HTH! Good luck !

  • When DS got it, he mainly got the fever and rash on his limbs and only had a couple of sores.  We got by with a lot of fruit, applesauce, cold stuff like that.  Make sure that you wash your hands often enough too!  It sucked, but he got through it fairly quick.  GL--hope everyone is better soon!

  • DS has had it twice and both times were AWFUL.  10 days of pure agony, waking every hour at night screaming in pain, not eating anything, etc. Even now, just hearing the words "Hand Foot & Mouth" makes DH cringe.  But everyone reacts differently, and many kids don't get such bad cases.  We just got "lucky" that way.  Hope your LO doesn't get a bad case!

A tip to help the painful sores: mix Children's benedryl and regular strength liquid Mylanta and put it directly on the sores on his tongue (we used a q-tip to apply it).  My DS1 HATES medicine (of any kind), but he willingly let me put it on his tongue once he realized how much better it made him feel.  Our pedi recommended it to us when DS had a coxsaccie viral illness (wasn't classic hand foot and mouth, but he still had the sores).

DS had fever/vomitting for two days, followed by 3-4 days with two large, painful sores on his tongue.  No rash on his hands or feet, though, and only the two sores on his mouth, so pedi didn't want to call it HFM.  With lots of hand-washing, we kept it from spreading around our house, which was important, because DS2 was only 6 weeks old.
