eczema OR hand/foot/mouth moms - what is this? Pics included

So I still dont' know whether Sam has coxsackie/ HFM or not.  He has had a little rash around his mouth for two days, and this morning woke up with really angry blisters in several places and awful diaper rash.  There is one tiny blister on the sole of his foot, but it could just be an extension of what is on his ankles. Nothing on his palms or feet otherwise -  right now I am leaning toward a really bad eczema flare, since it's all of his eczema spots (ankles, wrists, backs of knees) are raging.  The only new area is his mouth and his bum.  He has HORRID blistery diaper rash.  He is in totally fine spirits, is eating and drinking, and has not had a fever at all.

It could still be HFM and DH will take him in to the ped tomorrow, but has anyone had experience with this?

His forefinger and thumb are often really raw since he chews on them instead of a paci or teething toy (thanks molars), but this is more blistery than usual.

You can see how raw it looks

You can see the spots around his mouth. And his mouth is full of food :)

Ankles often look similar, but this is more red and "angry" than usual. He did eat a TON of guacamole last night and I wonder if this is a food sensitivity exacerbating his eczema.

Anyway, I am just at a loss.  I really hope it's not HFM since it's contagious and I have chemo tomorrow AND because we are getting ready to go out of town with friends and their two kids.  But it is what it is, I guess!

UGH.

  • Ethan's eczema has never looked like that but I have no HFM experience.  Sorry that does not look comfy.

Yeah, I know right?  But he only is having issues where he has pre-existing eczema patches, apart from the hiney and the mouth.  If he does have HFM, I wonder if it is exacerbating the eczema spots since they are so sensitive.

  • I'm sorry... but I think it looks like HFM. What makes me think that is the diaper rash. Charlie had a different version of it about a month ago and he had spots in his mouth but I was told to look hands, feet and his bottom.

Thinking of you tomorrow with the chemo and I hope everything goes well. (I also heard that HFM isn't contagious once the blisters are out so hopefully that helps with daycare)

  • Looks like HFM to me...  Sorry.  :(  Dylan had it, and he never had a fever with it.  It started in his mouth and around his crotch and then spread all over with a few spots on his hands and feet.  He was miserable because his mouth hurt him so bad, but the rest of the rash didn't phase him.  It was a short-lived virus though, thankfully.  I hope that this passes soon and no one else gets it.

Ditto about the contagiousness.  The pedi told us he wasn't contagious once the rash appeared and could go to daycare.  The daycare workers told us the same.

Another question - if your LO had HFM, what was the course of the illness?  After the rash appeared, how long until it started to subside?  I'm hoping (duh) that if this is HFM that this is the worst of it.

In other words, please tell me this will now ruin our vacay ;)  Yes, I know, priorities - but damnit I just got a pedicure and everything!!!

Poor Sam has the worst sense of timing.  He spiked a 105 fever the day I went to the ER for my tumor, and then had roseola while I was in the hospital.  Now, HFM just before chemo and vacay!!  Could be worse, I am sure :)

When are you leaving on vacation?  For us, Dylan started with mouth pain on a Saturday evening.  We thought it was teething, we noticed the sores in his mouth on Sunday AM.  We then noticed a rash around his diaper area around lunchtime on Sunday.  We saw it spreading and brought him the the pedi urgent care Sunday evening.  They gave us mouth wash for the sores in his mouth.  He was at daycare on Monday, feeling pretty much normal.  The rash was gone by Wednesday evening I think.  Very short-lived for us (and the other kids that got it from being around him on Saturday before we knew he was sick).  He was absolutely miserable for 2 nights with the mouth pain, even gave up the paci during this time.

I don't think it should affect your vacation, especially since we've been told by multiple sources that it's contagious the days before the rash breaks out and then not after that.

ETA - I lie, we kept him home from daycare that Monday.  He went back on Wednesday (he's home with me on Tuesdays and Thursdays), but was feeling well on Tuesday.

Cool!  Thanks so much.  We will keep him home tomorrow until we know the real cause of it, but we are leaving on Wednesday to go out of town.  Sounds like this might be the peak of it, but of course... I know it can get worse! I'm just glad I heard about this from you guys and friends, and made sure that he got lots of fluids today.  I don't love giving him sweet fluids, but diluted gatorade meant lots of wet, heavy diapers so at least (knock wood) we may not end up with dehydration requiring IV fluids, like my friend's daughter had to have!!

  • That looks like HFM in my opinion! Brady has it right now and also has eczema too!

Oh no, I'm sorry you are dealing with it too! DH is going to take him to the doc, but (knock wood), he slept great last night and is still sound asleep. We did give him a half dose of benadryl (in case it's an allergy-related issue) and some motrin, and he has made barely a peep.  So at least the dude is getting his rest :)  Hope we all get through this!

  • coxsackie is tricky because no two kids respond the same ...Bella had it with fever and loss of appetite but no blisters where I could see...the pedi only noticed when he checked her mouth...the worst part was the fever and loss of appetite for us but then she was fine...I think the diaper rash you mention make me think it is coxsakie...hope he is better soon and you are able to enjoy your vacay!!
