3rd Trimester

I'm supposed to see a Dr. if I think I'm leaking amniotic fluid, right?

Last night, I noticed that I'm leaking about a teaspoon per hour of clear, thin fluid. I showed my husband, and we both agreed that there was absolutely no "substance" to this, and that it had the consistency of water. It also had a scent that I've never smelled before. So, we concluded that it very well could be amniotic fluid and headed to L&D to have it checked. When we got there, they treated us like complete idiots and kept stating that "my water had not broken" and that "I was not in labor" and basically asking why we were there. I had to explain several times that I didn't think I was in labor or that my water broke, but I was concerned about bacteria and infection, and just wanted to have the fluid checked and see what I should do if it was, in fact amniotic fluid. They did give me an ultrasound and confirmed that the fluid amount is safe...and then they swabbed my cervix to do the fern test thing on it, but stated that it was "completely dry", never gave me the results of the test, told me that it's normal to have discharge during pregnancy and then sent me home. I still have no idea if what I'm leaking is amniotic fluid, or what, if anything, I should do about it!

Umm, before going in, I was under the impression that leaking amniotic fluid can be dangerous, but they made me feel like it's no big deal and like I over reacted. I'm still concerned about this, and also concerned about the way I was treated. I'm due in 5 days, and now I'm absolutely dreading having to go back to the hospital and deal with these doctors and nurses again :(

Re: I'm supposed to see a Dr. if I think I'm leaking amniotic fluid, right?

  • Leaking amniotic fluid is quite dangerous, and just because the amount is 'safe doesn't mean you're not leaking a bit. You don't have to be in labor for your water to break, or for you to leak! Honestly, I'd be unbelievably furious at being blown off like that. That's just me tho, lol. When it comes to doctors and nurses, I'll battle tooth and nail to the death if I have to, haha!! It sucks you're finding out how fail they are now, when it's too late to change hospitals. I'd speak to your doctor about it. Maybe s/he can give you some advice on how to deal with snotty nurses, or maybe s/he delivers at more than one hospital? My doc does if you request it, so maybe yours might?

If you're leaking that much and they're just being brats about it, I'd start collecting the liquid in a Dixie cup or something, and when you've got a decent amount go back and say 'hey pricks, this stuff is coming out of my "completely dry" vagina, could you tell me what it is please?' and don't leave until they do. It's your body, you have a right to know whats going on, and they have to tell you the results of any/all testing. Immediately. Make them let you see the results. For now, I'd just keep any and all objects out of your vagina. If you are leaking, you don't want to push any bacteria or anything up there; that's how you get an infection. Good luck!

  • I had a simliar thing happen to me when I was pregnant with DD#1. I was leaking this clear fluid that I knew wasn't urine, but it was so thin I thought it couldn't be like a discharge and I was like 4 or 5 days away from my due date, andwas concerned that I was having a slow leak of AF. Well, turns out that it was not my water, but just a thin discharge. Good news is that I had her 3 days later, so maybe this is just your body's preparation for delivery!

I'm sorry they treated you like that at the hospital. I myself am a nurse and I still went in because I'm not an expert in Labor and Delivery, I didn't know what was going on, but I did know that most doctors like to have baby out within 24 hours of having confirmed rupture of membranes. You did everything right! Hopefully next time you visit L&D it will be time for LO to arrive, and you will have different doctors and nurses and have a more pleasant experience!

  • That is so horrible that they treated you that way.  Honestly if the hospital I went to did that to me I'd probably look into delivering elsewhere (If that is an option for you).  You did the right thing by going in and they are supposed to be there to make sure you and baby are healthy, which in your case meant giving you the proper tests and RESULTS to know what was going on!  I'd suggest writing a letter to the hospital explain how you were treated and how it made you feel.  That kind of behavior is NOT acceptable!
  • Thanks for the reassurance, everyone. I was feeling pretty awful about the whole experience, but just hearing that I have a right to feel this way and that other people would have been upset too, has helped a lot. I really do appreciate the feedback quite a bit.
