I am a blond but my roots come in dirty blond, it looks funny so i dye my roots.. I have done research on dying hair while pregnant but there is so much back and forth weather or not its ok.. there is a lot of controversy about the smell and the dye sinking into your skin/blood...My doctors have told me that they have to tell me the risks and I have to make my own call...I know its more geared towards the 1st tri and I can hold off if it really is bad for the baby, I mean its been 22 +wks already..what do u ladies think? Have you died your hair during pregnancy, What have your doctors said on the subject?

Re: Whats the deal w/ dying ur hair?
Yeah I am in the same boat. I have really long dark roots now! My OB told me it is perfectly safe but that if I am worried about it just wait until after the first trimester to do it. This is when the placenta is fully in place and protects the fetus from bad. Also, the fetus is basically almost fully formed but just needs to grow now.
My aunt who is a certified beautician/hairstylist said that it is safe but just be weary of the fumes. The fumes are what is dangerous she said, the bleach doesn't really get deep into the bloodstream.
I just graduated into second trimester so I'm going to wear a mask and make my hairstylist open the door (her chair is closest to it) so that the room is well ventilated.
im a hairdresser, i have colored my hair twice so far, i am around the chemicals daily and i have colored lots of pregnant woman... just keep the area well ventilated and youll be fine. and wear gloves!
i plan on doing hair up until this baby pops out, and i have plenty of friends who are also in this industry that did the same throughout their pregnancy... everyone is fine and all fingers and toes are accounted for. if we are around this weekly and our doctors are not telling us to quit our jobs, i think we are in a safe environment. if you feel burning or any irritation at all, wash the color out of your hair... its mainly just the hormones in your body that would throw of the balances.
if you are really worried, you can always use organic color with no peroxide. good luck and go ahead and pamper yourself!
I dyed my hair when I was about 5 weeks pregnant, but I didn't know I was pregnant yet. After finding out and going to the Dr she said I could dye, perm, do whatever with my hair and that it's perfectly safe.
She seems to think certain things are safe like dying your hair, but going to a chiropractor is a big no no lol
I was told my my OB-GYN that there has been nothing to prove or disprove how dying your hair will affect the baby. She seemed on the fence about it, but said as long as it wasn't an "all-the-time" thing she didn't see the issue. A hair dresser I went to recently told me that all of her co-workers who have been pregnant while working had dyed their hair and had no issues to speak of. She said that SHE heard through the grape vine that semi-permanent is the best route to go if you dye your hair while pregnant. She also said, it depends on what you want to do as well. Dying your hair blonde is more likely to be harmful that dying your hair a shade darker than it already is (which is what I do).
I haven't decided how I feel, or what I think about it so I haven't done it yet, but I have really been wanting to use my John Frieda foam color that I bought before getting the news that I was expecting, lol.
Im a hair stylists... the amount of chemicals that actually get into your skin in the 25-30 min that its sitting on your scalp is very very minimal. I have done my color twice so far and didnt think twice about it. If you are really really worried I would suggest for you to opt for highlights because the bleach wont go on your actual scalp, it stays in the foils.
I say go for it! Doing your hair makes you feel so much better
My doc said to wait until 12 weeks to dye it. I did, and have dyed it 2x since to cover my gray hairs.
I just used a box dye I bought at the store.
