Breastfeeding

Burping after breast vs burping after bottle?

In the last few days, I've gone from 100% pumper to an 80% pumper and 20% breastfeeder (using the nipple shield). I've noticed that it is easier to get DD to burp (trucker-style) after her meals at the bottle. However, whenever I BF her (via the nipple shield), I can't get her to burp.

Is this normal? Should I try harder to get her to burp?

  • Normal. Most babies take in less air when they BF vs. when they bottle-feed. Unless she seems uncomfortable, I'd say you're fine!

  • They take in less air with the bottle than with the breast. With DS, I still always had to make him burp after he breastfed or he would spit up. If your DD doesn't have any issues after not burping, I think it's ok if you don't get one from her.

  • Thanks all! She has relfux, so I get worried about the no burping thing. It takes an act of congress to get her to fully spit up, so I can't really use that as a gauge.

  • BF babies take in a lot less air.  SO, I am sure she is okay.  I'm excited that you've been able to BF 20%!  That is progress! Yay!

  • When my first BF, I never had to burp her.  With my 2nd child, I notice that she always seems gassy and needs to burp in between sides and sometimes a couple times after she is done eating.

  • I'm only a few days in but I've noticed DD never burps after BFing but when she does her formula she burps once per 5 ml. Yay for hopefully not needing the formula addition now that my milk came in though :)
