Constipation

DD is constipated frequently. The nurse told us to start using miralax regularly to help. Anyone else have this problem? Any help with it?

Re: Constipation

  • yeah i take miralax every other day or so, but i have IBS.  and i'm an adult.  it's supposedly a very safe product...it only adheres to water molecules in your system so it's not actually absorbed into your body.  but if it was my child i would seek another opinion on the matter.  have you tried any other things first?  prunes?  apple juice?  is this a last resort kind of thing???

We tried EVERYTHING for DS and nothing ever really helped. Our pedi finally recommended miralax (and told us that her son takes it daily).  I put it off for awhile, but finally figured if she is willing to give it to her own child, we should try it.  It really, really helped.  DS had been having very hard, large poops only every 4-5 days and would scream every time.  He would usually bleed a little from tears.  It was awful.  Now we give 1-1.5 tsp of Miralax everyday and he has a normal soft poop every other day or so.  It is awesome.

  • MY DD had the same problem since she started on milk.  This was our solution:  2 prunes a day and 1-2 dried or fresh apricots a day--with her morning milk as soon as she wakes up.  She also has a lot of different fruits throughout the day, such as watermelon, plums, peach.  Also, avocado--which is high in fiber.  No bananas, no apples ever.

This has now eliminated the constipation.  She poops every day and it is normal every single time.

  • We haven't had the problem but friends have recommended prune juice for that problem.

  • That is the same situation we are in. I have now started giving my DD miralax on a semi regular basis. I have to make sure the dose is right because if you give just a bit too much she has the opposite problem.

It does seem to make her go-at least once a day, but with giving it to her more often we hope it will make those one a days less painful.

  • When A hasn't pooped in a day or two I know shes backe dup & will usually bake her a sweet potato and it'll make her go usually that evening or the next day & its a load full! Increase the amount of liquids (water)/prune juice. Watch the sugar content of foods and like PP said no bananas or apples. Good luck, I dont miss those days!

  • DS had MAJOR constipation issues...pretty much his whole life despite that he was breastfed for an entire year.  We tried everything...so many prunes and prune products...nothing worked and he was miserable.  He would try to poop and would work so hard that he'd work up a major sweat and would just scream.  We ended up puting him on 1-1.5 teaspoons of miralax each morning and it works fabulously.  HE has no issues pooping now -- usually once a day and it's nice and soft.  Before we could always tell when he was trying to poop because of the torture he would go though; not anymore. Usually the only way we know is that he tells us he's stinky.  It's a miracle drug!  A pediatric gastroenterologist recommended it for a friend of mine's baby who was having similar issues and DS's doctor also had her daughter on it for a long time.  Another friend has a 5 year old and he's being weaned off of it now.  It's good stuff and all the reserach shows that it's OK to take long term.  Good luck!  I remember those days!
  • DS takes it every day.  We are able to get by with ~1/2 tsp daily once we got the constipation under control, but any less and he gets backed up again (which in our house means painful, screaming poops and virtually no eating since his tummy is so uncomfortable).  Every now and then he actually drinks enough water/juice and consumes buckets of blueberries and raspberries (which are our wonder foods) and then he's on the runny side for a day or two, but since he won't do so consistently, we use Miralax.  I'd definitely try food/drink (natural) improvements too - they can only help and might at least mean you can use less Miralax.
  • On advice of our pedi, DS takes every day (1 tsp in 8oz) in the summer.  During cooler months, we can go down to 3x a week.  When we first started the protocol, doc said start with 1 tsp, but we could go as high as 3 tsp daily if needed.  Thankfully, we never needed more than one.  Miralax does not create lazy bowel, it just softens the stool by encouraging it to hold more water.  It is completely safe and often prescribed in Canadian Children's hospitals.
