Breastfeeding

Pumping questions :-)

I posted a question about feeding the other day, but now I am starting to wonder if I am getting enough hind milk in my expressed milk. Is this possible?   My husband gives LO a bottle every evening (4 oz and he is 5 weeks old).  He is hungry again about an hour after the feeding.  Last night at his 2 AM change, he had a green poopy diaper. (Which I have read is a sign of foremilk/hindmilk imbalance?)  Now this morning his poops have been the normal yellow.

When I pump and  I start to let down, I switch to the longer pulls (don't know the technical terms!!) Then, when the milk is no longer spraying, I switch back to the shorter pulls to get a second let down.  Am I doing this correctly??  Is this what everyone does?  I pump for 10-15 minutes.  My breasts feel empty when I am done, but do I need to go longer?

Thanks for any advice!!!

Re: Pumping questions :-)

  • I asked my pediatrician if green poo meant he wasn't getting enough hindmilk and she looked at me like I was crazy and said that it was not linked.  I'm pretty sure both yellow and green are considered "normal."  My understanding is that as long as your LO is gaining weight you are just fine!  Smile

  • As an side, I generally nurse for 10-15 minutes on one side.  Sometimes I'll offer the other breast after that but usually he passes out while burping and it therefore content.  GL!

  • I pump for 15 minutes but I never switch back between the shorter and longer settings. I use the short for two minutes unless I get a let down faster in which I then switch to the longer pull for the remainder if the time.
