Growth Spurts and Pumping

Do you ladies continue your pumping schedule during a growth spurt?

I really want to start building up my stash - at this point I have less than 20 oz - but just can't seem to find the time to pump. I think DS started his 3 week growth spurt last night. He's been at the breast just about hourly since 5 am. He took a 1 hour nap this morning (he usually sleeps 2-3 hours at that time and I try to use the time to pump and shower) and I slept too since I only got like 3 hours of sleep last night. Now he's finally asleep again and I got to take my shower, but I don't know whether or not to pump. I'm afraid he's going to wake up wailing at any moment. Plus my nipples are starting to get really sore! We have latch issues that we had been getting a lot better at, but this morning, he's been back to his old shallow latch. I kind of feel like any break I can give my poor boobs will be worth more than a pumping session at this point.

Sorry, I guess this turned out to be more of a pity party than a question - but I am curious what other pumpers do in this situation. Thanks!

Re: Growth Spurts and Pumping

  • It's ok to chill out during growth spurts for sure.

Also, it really isn't totally necessary to generate this gigantic freezer stash.  First of all, I literally only touched mine 2 times ever before I ended up donating over 600oz when DD was 11 mo.  Second, I battled oversupply for a super long time b/c I was a pumping fanatic trying to create this giant freezer supply.

Obviously oversupply is better than the alternative, but as long as you are meeting your baby's needs that is really the main goal for you right now.  Good luck mama!  Hopefully the growth spurt is over soon- for your sake.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.

Thanks for this post.  I have been kinda kickin my own a$$ to pump more (I'm not EBF, I let DH give bottles of BM at night or sometimes if they are still hungry after a breast feeding.  And if there's no BM in the fridge he can give formula we got from the hospital).  I was feeling kinda guilty for not getting up in the middle of the night to pump.  I try to do the first night feeding on the breast, but if they don't latch right away I give a bottle.  I'm not gonna stress myself out over pumping alot.  I'll stick to my approx 3 sessions a day :)
