Hi All,
Coming over from PGAL. I'm currently 5 weeks and experiencing some spotting. Most of the stories/articles I read are on the fence about bleeding - it could be just another symptom of pregnancy or it could mean the beginning of something much worse.
My question is, since most of you are rounding the final stretch, did any of you have spotting in the first trimester? Obviously you made it past most of the crucial miscarriage times, so reading your experiences might give me (and other PGALers) some hope. Thank you in advance!
Re: PGALer wondering: Anyone with successful spotting stories?
I spotted all through first tri and well into second. It ranged from super light to fairly heavy, from brown to bright and dark red. There were a couple times I was positive I was losing the baby... and everything turned out ok
I previously had three miscarriages, and really thought spotting was a sure sign that things weren't going to work out. Proved myself wrong this time
GL to you! I know it's scary. Do your best to take it one day at a time.
I had early spotting. I did go in and get checked out and ended up with an early u/s just to make sure everything was okay. However, there was not really an explanation and it did not seem to cause any problems. Prior to getting pregnant I would often spot for a few days prior to getting AF. One of the first signs I might be pregnant was a lack of spotting. So needless to say it freaked me out at the time. It turned out okay for me.
I know it is hard, but try not to freak out too much. From everything I have read/been told, the general thought is heavy cramping and red bleeding together are bad. Brown/pink spotting might not be anything. Mild cramping is also normal is early pregnancy.
Good luck and congrats.
First, congrats on your pg!
I had spotting at the end of my 1st tri/ beginning of my 2nd tri with my twins. I was scared to death but it was most likely due to an irritated cervix. I just stayed off my feet and drank lots of fluid. It subsided within 2-3 days. I went on to have a full term twin pg.
My sister, who is currently pg with #2, had major bleeding in her 1st tri. Severe cramping too. Turns out she had a ruptured cyst that was causing the bleeding/pain and the bleeding went on and off for about almost 2 weeks. She is currently 34 weeks pg and w/o any further complications.
Hope you're feeling better and that these 2 stories gave you some hope!
I spotted in my 7th week. I ended up being sent to the hospital for an ultrasound and they couldn't find any bleeding around the baby or anything like that.
Everything turned out fine with my pregnancy - I was due yesterday. Still waiting on this little guy to make his appearance.
Good luck and don't stress too much even though it's very easy to do.
All these these stories have given me hope. My discharge started as brown (at 4 weeks) and has since progressed to pink and sometimes red stringy discharge. No cramps or pain - nothing close to my miscarriage in May. I've also been diagnosed with a yeast infection, so that's not helping things any. A small amount of blood mixed with a ton of white creamy medication can look like a peachy, scary mess.
I had spotting at 5 1/2 weeks, they sent me for an ultrasound and we saw yolk sac and gestational sac attached high in uterus!
They did a follow up ultrasound 10 days later since I was still spotting, and we saw fetal pole and heartbeat!
I spotted for a few days after my second early ultrasound, and during my first OB appointment my OB did a PAP and said that my cervix was bloody, but he could tell all blood was coming from the outside and not to worry.
I spotted until about 16 weeks. Sometimes it was brown, other times bright pink/red. I also had these shooting cramps on either side of my uterus. Turns out that the shooting pains were nothing more than my ute stretching. I jujst wish someone would have mentioned that it was a normal stretching feeling instead of getting all paniky each time it happened. The spotting started to get really predictable....it would happen about every 3 weeks. I went off BCPs not long before getting pregnant so we figure that my body was still working on regulating itself period-wise.
Anyway, everything has turned out fine for me. I hope the same for you!
I had both ends of the spotting spectrum. My first two pregnancies I had spotting for about 4 days before the loss of the pregnancy at 6 weeks.
With my last (and successful!) pregnancy I had spotting at week 7 followed by heavy bleeding at 8 weeks. I went to the Er and had a SCH which resolved itself by week 12. I had light bleeding/spotting from 7-12 weeks which was unsettling but ultimately ended in a healthy little girl.

I've been in both situations--our first pregnancy, spotting was the beginning of a miscarriage around 8 weeks. With our second (current) pregnancy, I had no spotting at all until 9 weeks, and it was bright red blood. Because of my history, my midwife brought me in the same day, and couldn't figure out what was going on--she was able to pick up the heartbeat with the doppler, and an ultrasound the next day showed the baby was doing fine. So MFM and the midwife determined that the blood was due to stress. (Stress?!?). Baby's now 31 weeks, 4 days, and doing great--since then we've had a perfectly normal and healthy pregnancy.
I hope that your story turns out like our second--the worry will never go away, but it lessens the further along you get, and eventually turns into excitement moreso than worry. Good luck!

I spotted around 6 weeks. I called my doctor and they got me in the same day for an u/s since I was so worried. Baby was fine and there was a heartbeat. At 11 weeks I experienced full-on red bleeding. I called the doctor and the receptionist said there wasn't an appointment available that day but I showed up at the office anyways and demanded to be seen. When my doctor did an u/s the baby was flipping all around like nothing was wrong!
Turns out I had a low-lying placenta from where the baby had implanted. Whenever my bladder was full I would start bleeding. This lasted until 14 weeks and my placenta moved.
I had bleeding at 6 weeks and again around 14 weeks with my son. I had a SCH, but everything else was fine.
With this pregnancy I had bleeding again around 6 weeks. It was another SCH. No bleeding since then.
Good luck, I know how scary it is.
I had three spotting scares with this pregnancy. 5wks, 7 wks and 9 wks. The doc spotted a tiny hematoma early on but the others were unexplained.
Each scare sent me over the edge but so far, so good! (fingers and toes..and eyes crossed:)
Good luck to you!!!
