This is a serious question...................What is it that you are naming??!!!

Serious... yes. Current names being considered contrary to this particular boards dislike. I really do love how much people on here hate them!

I don't think you get the question. Are these names for a boy or girl?

Also, while you may looove how much people on here hate them please consider that your child will also hate their name if you choose one of these. They will be mocked mercilessly on the playground.

Well I can tell that you "love how much people hate your names" but that WAS a serious question.............What are you naming??

P.S. Try to get your "negative attention fix" on something other then your kids names.

  • Even within the Marvel universe there are way better names. I'm going to (not surprisingly) echo the rest of the board and say I think any of these would be a terrible idea, but in particulay Legion, Mimic, Elixir, and, for the love of god Onyxx (particularly if you're white).

X-Men  names that I still think are terrible but would nevertheless be an improvement...

    Creed

    Phoenix

    Korvus

    Rictor

Seriously though, these names just scream "Trying to hard to be cool." There's nothing wrong with an original name, but it should be a name, not a personality replacement just in case, God forbid, your kid isn't cool enough.

The picture of you that this statement paints is not a pretty one.

To answer your original question, I think the name Cain is a nice name.  All the other names are ridiculous to me.  I'm not familiar with X-Men and the names just sound silly.

  • Well since you're an obvious X-Men fan, here are my thoughts:

Legion grows up to kill his father. So that's out. And the rest is kind of begging your kid to get made fun of. Since you already have a Logan, why not with with Victor? And seeing as you already have an Xavier, how about Scott? Or Kurt?

  • I like LaComtesse's suggestion of Phoenix--that seems to fit the bill of comic books, being "out there"/different, but has merits in and of itself. On a side note, making a statement with the names of children is not always (or ever) the best format to make that statement. My father was a huge Misfits fan, but if I had been name after any of the band members of their songs, I would be mad at him to this day. What you're obsessed with does not mean your children will have the slightest interest or inclination to like (in fact, quite the opposite, if I recall from my rebellious days).

Name choices should be bold, but they shouldn't be trademarked and known for only one thing. Names should be versatile and designed to work in any given situation people find themselves in (ideally). I don't think your list fits that bill.

  • Ok, so b/c I am bored and my son is a huge Marvel fan, I googled x-men names to see if anything popped, seems like you want something a little unconventional but the world wants you to give your kid a break here's what I got (and I assumed you were naming a boy):

-Many of the X-men have the last name Summers which is kind of a cool name

-Iceman's name is: Robert Louis Drake

-There's a character named Darwin, which nms, it's not bad

-Marvel Girl's last name is Grey

    -Gambit's name is Remy

Ok, there are a ton of names on the list I found, I actually like Summers best because so many of the X-Men have it as a last name and it is quite different for you.

Sorry I don't know how to make this a poll...

    Mimic

    Cypher

    Cain

    Onyxx

    Legion

    Elixir

    Telford

    Skylark

I'll try my best to be constructive since it's obvious these are the type of names you are going for and you won't be convinced otherwise.

Mimic - eh. Could be easily made fun of.

Cypher - I guess this is my favorite of them. It doesn't have a negative connotation.

Onyxx - this sounds like a stripper name, especially with two x's.

Cain - bad connotation here, I wouldn't use this.

Legion - same as Cain. Bad connotation.

Elixir - sounds too hippie-ish to me. Plus easily made fun of "He licks her" etc. etc.

Telford - not too bad. Old school sounding if you're into old fashioned names.

Skylark - I'd stay away from car names. Especially since Buick Skylarks are NOT very cool. Also sounds hippie-ish to me.

  • I'm hoping this is MUD...or whatever would be the naming equivalent of MUD.

Edit : If this IS for real, I hope you really reconsider what you're doing to your child.  Look at the responses on this board, that will be what most people think when they hear his/her name.  Maybe they won't be rude enough to say it to your face, but very few people will like that name list.

You may not care when he/she is a baby, and maybe you're rich enough to support him/her when they don't get a job because everyone passes on Wolverine's resume, but obviously you cared a little if you asked public opinions.

  • I thought you were kidding til I saw you named your kid Madrox. I'm sorry but these are all absolutely horrible. Please don't subject your kid to the teasing that will come along with these names.

  • Yeah, I got nothin'.  I usually try hard to be at least slightly encouraging, but I'm kinda looking like this right now:

    image

That said, I'll try to play along: if I were forced by a dastardly villain to choose one of these names or see the world go to ruin, I'd choose either Cypher (and you can bet I'd be using the nn Cy!) or Telford.  But that's only because my other choice would be world ruin.

IT's one thing to want to be a little unique. It's another to name all your children after comic book characters.

As opposed to naming your child after actors, story books, biblical characters, cities, rhyming names, last names or all the same first letter?

Actually, most of these aren't that popular on this board.  The exception might mean Biblical characters because those are generally normal names.  I like Boaz, which is in the Bible but I know it's too out there.  Where as John is nice and traditional.  DS is named after a character in a book, but Theodore was a name before hand.  The real problem here is that these aren't actual names that you've suggested.  They're aliases for fictional characters with supernatural powers created by a writer to captivate the minds of a young audience.

    Yes.

And the thing about biblical characters is, most of us, even if we're not religious, know something about them.  I don't know squat about X-Men and neither do the majority of people your kids will encounter.  That's why I think Cain is actually one of the worst names on your list, along with Legion; I don't know who Cain is in X-Men land but I think "dude who killed his brother NOT COOL" because anyone who's gotten ten pages into the Bible knows that.  Xavier and Logan are decent enough names because they have other associations; Madrox is a little weird but kind of like Maddox; but nearly all the names you've suggested are bizarre and will make no sense to anyone outside your universe.

Plus, as at least one PP suggested, you know what?  Your kids are probably going to rebel against everything you love and stand for.  Anyone who's been a teenager should know this.  And they will resent you even more if you give them a name that makes no sense to anyone who doesn't share your obscure interests (which will only become more obscure as your child ages) than they would if you gave them a name that had special meaning to you but at least also made sense to to rest of the world.

All of these are terrible, sorry.

If you like X-Men, use the character's real names, like you did with Xavier and Logan.  With that in mind, there's Scott (Cyclops), Erik (Magneto), Sean (Banshee), or Alex (Havok).  And please don't think about adding Nightcrawler to the list.

My husbands name is Kurt which is Nightcrawler! Xavier is an unusual name, as is Madrox but Scott, Erik (which is my Brother in law), Sean and Alex are all too common and ordinary. Having an unusual name myself I see no issues with being different!

If those are too common and ordinary, why did you use Logan?

  • Very different style than me but thats great..  I think Cain would be the only one there I would see as a name...  Love Logan and Xaviar btw

also not so crazy about skylark (wasn't that an old junky car?)  but I really like Skylar/Schuyler)

  • Skylark was a Buick, yes, but it is also the name of a characer from X-men. We would use the nn Sky. Some of the other names would have nicknames as wel... aka Elixir would be Elix (similar to Alex) Telford would be Telly or Ford Cypher would be Cy (pronounce sigh).

Thank you to few people on this board that were actually helpful, and for taking the time out of their day to look up alternative names! That is truely appreciated! Drake and Darwin and great suggestions... Remy is already used as one of Madrox's middle names. Kurt is my husband and Erik is his brother so both of those are out too! Grey is a really cool name to but it is the last name of a girl character and therefore we wouldn't use it for a boy. All the names I posted are boys. We don't know the gender but we already have a girl name picked out. Phoenix.

As for the rest of the people on here, I didn't ask for you to be disrespectful! I simply asked if there was a name you prefered. A simple NO would have sufficed.

Exactly.  In 15 years, people won't think, "oh, his aprents like X-Men."  They'll think, "What is this name supposed to be?"  I'm all for names being meaningful, but they need to be usable as well.  I loved my grandpa, but I'm not likely to name my kid Melvin after him.

I don't think anyone was being particularly disrespectful to you, they were just giving you their honest opinion. A lot of people think the name choices were poorly thought out, when it comes to the future of your child. That is their opinion, they are entitled to it, just as it is within your right to disregard them completely, you'll do whatever you want anyway, just ignore the comments you don't like. I don't particularly like any of those names either, and just be careful, that your child could possibly hate their name so much they legally change it when they're old enough to.

May I ask why you went more for more code-sounding names than the character names this time around? I'm simply curious as to why that was.

However, back to your OP if I had to pick one, Telford, because I think the nicknames Telly or Ford seem the most reasonable. And just a heads up, even though Grey was the last name of a girl, I knew a guy with the first name of Grey.

LOVE this.  I adore names that carry significance, and what a sweet, empowering significance this would be for your LO (Plus it's unique without being youneek ;-))

  • There isn't a particular reason we went with their X-men name as opposed to their person names. I prefer unusual names and most of the characters person names are very ordinary.. aka scott, philip, james, charles. I was trying to find other names that were different! Since my name is very uncommon I like uncommon names.

If our child/any of our children grow up and choose to not use their first name that will be up to them, there are TONS of people that go by their middle names.

Thank you for your oppinion! I think Grey is a very cute name and I agree it is unisex. However, since we are usuing X-men characters we don't want to use one that would be a girl if this child happens to be a boy.  I love Phoenix, Rahne, Storm, Rogue as girls names! Guess we will see soon enough!
