Full body suits for winter babies?

I just read in another post that the full body suit(baby coat) is a hazard for baby? Is that true? If so, why? I live in Wisconsin and in novemeber it will be FREEZING. If their hazards what is my baby supposed to use to go out?

Re: Full body suits for winter babies?

  • You need to get one of those car seat covers. Dress the baby in layers and a hat and then the cover when you go out.

  • There is too much fabric between your baby and the seat/straps that they are not properly harnessed in.  I just dressed DD is regular clothes, used a blanket and warmed up the car before leaving.  We also always have extra blankets in the car in the winter.

  • Yes I am getting one. Maybe I should have asked in my post. Why are they a hazard?

  • It's a hazard if used in a carseat.  Get a cover that goes over the carseat, not the bundle me that also goes inside. In case of an accident, anything inside the straps other than your baby can void the warranty on your seat and often insurance will not cover a new seat.  Put your baby in regular clothes, in the seat, put the straps on, then put a blanket over the baby and use a carseat cover.

  • Oh okay. Thanks well yea a friend said she never used one with her baby and he was born in Jan. Plus I don't go out much in the winter she'd only be out for her appointments and on the "nice" winter days. I hate driving in snow and I hate the cold.

In an accident, the carseat straps can't be tight enough around those and baby can be ejected from the seat.  You can use the lighter weight fleece ones I believe, but the heavy ones are not recommended.

  • I had one for my LO (they are sooo cute!). You can't use it in the car.  Use a carseat cover or blankets, etc.  They are good to have if you are going to be outside for a long time.  We used it for playing in the snow and for looking for a christmas tree.  My LO was around 6 months.
  • I remember the heavy snow suits....when my sister was born, I was 8, and when she was dressed in that suit was the only time we were allowed to pick her up, and then had to sit down with her (because she had lots of padding, and I think my mom felt that if she got dropped it wouldn't be as bad)... ANYWAY..lol  we are having a December baby, and I plan to get one of the JJ Cole covers, then dress in warm clothes, a hat, and blankets underneath the cover.  That, and heat the car up a bit before leaving.

That's a lot of layers.. you are going to have one hot little baby in your car under your JJ Cole cover that is not reccomended for use with the carseat in the vehicle.

FYI, I used a Bundle Me....when i had my carseats inspected by a state trooper, he said everything looked good, but to immediately remove the Bundle Me when i got home b/c it's not flame resistent.  God forbid I got into a car accident and my car caught fire, it's like a fire magnet and your baby is strapped into it, laying ontop of it.  i only had to visualize this once and I removed it.  Now this was over 2 years ago, so maybe they are flame resistent now, but I just wanted to thow that out there.

  • I will be using blankets instead of the car seat covers.  You can get a blanket into the side seams where you can't with the car seat cover.  This is also true when they get older with winter coats, it can void your warranty if something happens.

Even if they are flame resistant now they should not be used.  Nothing should come between baby and the car seat, not a blanket, towel or bundle me.  If you want to use it for for going for walks I'm sure it's wonderful.

  • I live in Wisconsin and my son was born in February. We just used a few layers of blankets tucked in his car seat (not between him and the straps, just around the sides of him) and it was plenty warm in the infanct carrier for trips to and from the car.

100% this!  When our DD was in the NICU we had to do a car seat challenge with her and when we brought in our car seat we had the Bundle Me in it (she was born in January).  We were not allowed to begin the car seat challenge or allowed to leave the hospital (when she was ready) with it due to the massive safety hazard of it being between the baby and the car seat.  Don't buy a Bundle Me!!!

Are the shower cap style ones OK or are they also a no-no?

  • The hazard with coats is that in an accident, the coat compresses, pushing all that extra air out, and then the straps aren't tight enough to protect baby.

When carseats are tested, they are tested with x amount of padding.  With extra padding, the carseat has not been tested or designed with that amount of padding, and you can't guarantee the child's safety and that the carseat will do its job.

In general, the after-market car seat accessories are a big no no.  There are no regulations about materials being fire-safe, the padding, etc...  This even goes for the mats that they sell to protect the seats of the car.  It can cause the car seat to slide more than it should in a crash.

Those are fine.  They don't get in between the snaps at all and don't interfere with bases either.  I had one for DS and loved it.  He would be just in regular longsleeves clothing with a hat, maybe a light blank tucked around him and then the topper took care of the rest.  I will get a pink one for DD too.  I prefer this kind with the flap so that you don't wake them or if it's raining.
