2nd Trimester

Peeing at night

I know it is normal to pee a lot and I definitely have been peeing more than normal. The strange thing is that while I do pee often during the day, I seem to get up 6 or more times every night with the urge to pee and I have to get up and go or I can't go back to sleep. Sometimes I pee a lot and sometimes its only a little. I just went to the doctor last week and I don't have a UTI so I am wondering if it is just that my bladder is squished more when I'm laying down or what the issue could be? I don't even think I pee six times during the day.

Re: Peeing at night

  • I go all the dang time.  Its brutal and I get no sleep.  My Dr said to try not drinking a lot before bed, make sure I completely empty my bladder, yadda yadda yadda.  I still pee all the dang time at night.  I will say it has gotten better though. Now I only get up 3 or 4 times rather than once every 30 - 40 min.

  • Believe me you know when you have a UTI, it's more than just peeing a lot...there's also pain and burning involved.
  • I seem to pee regardless of the amount of water I drink, so annoying! I always make sure to empty my bladder before I go to bed (usually around 2am, I'm a night owl!) and am always up by 5 or 6am and can't fall back asleep.

I swear this is just our bodies preparing us for when our LOs arrive!

  • I pee multiple times a night.  Something that helps me stay sleepy is keeping the lights off when I go to the bathroom.  I find that if it stays dark and I keep my eyes kind of closed, I an fall back to sleep easier.  I'm a really crappy sleeper, too.

Also, when I"m done peeing, I bend over to put more pressure on my bladder.  This was recomended in one of my baby books to help get the "last drops" out.

Just think of it as practice for waking up 5 times a night with a new baby.  :)

  • I don't think the frequent all night bathroom trips ended for me til around 18wks, hopefully they simmer down for you soon, Im sure its just the pressure on your bladder. Also if you try to drink more during the day and less before bed it may help too I've noticed. Obviously don't dehydrate but you can hydrate well all day and maybe a half hr before bed limit the water

I went through a phase of that that lasted from about week 13 through week 16. I didn't go much during the day, either. It's really gotten a whole lot better in the past three weeks or so. I was getting up to pee 3-4 times per night, but now I usually don't need to get up at all. It got better for me, so hopefully it will for you, too!

  • The fluid that you retained in your feet and legs makes its way back into your bloodstream. This happens because now your feet and legs are elevated at night, so now it can be processed and makes its way to your bladder.

Avoid drinking 3 hours before bed.

  • Mine has been different every night.  Last night I only woke up once to pee, but the night before I was up at least 4 times.

I feel like I'm going to dehydrate myself if I stop drinking before I go to bed.  I have to keep a bottle of water on my nightstand because when I wake up to pee my mouth is always dry.

I agree that this is preparing us for waking up multiple times during the night once our LOs are here.  :-)

  • I pee all the time, probably every hour during the day and then 3-4 times a night.  It is especially bad when my LO turns and puts more pressure on the bladder and I almost have to run to make it!  Just as long as you aren't having any pain or bleeding I wouldn't worry too much about it, just chalk it up to pregnancy.
