Re: New Doll- WDYT

  • I don't think I would buy it because of the halter simulating BFing. Now if my child had a baby doll and started simulating BFing on her own based on seeing other people/mother BFing a younger sibling, etc I would think nothing of it.

  • The link doesn't seem to be clicky and I'm on my phone so I can't copy and paste, but I assume you're referring to the breast feeding doll.  If so, I think it's a great idea and do not understand what the controversy is about.  Children role play adult life in their play, most especially childrearing.  It is a very healthy and positive thing in my opinion that that is increasingly including breastfeeding.  If children remember being fed this way themselves or see their brothers or sisters or cousins or parents friends children being fed this way of course they're going to want to imitate it.  It normalizes bfing, which SHOULD be normal.  (Of course there are many reasons people choose not to or cannot, which is also okay, but that's another topic.) There is no more harm in a doll that facilitates this play than there is in a doll that "drinks" a bottle or wets a diaper.

As for the article I read...assuming it was the same one...this author thinks children should not be exposed to breast feeding or sex ed until middle school, which is just ridiculous.  Many children are "exposed" to bfing at birth, and if my child makes it to middle school with no concept of where babies come from then I have failed as a parent.

  • Of course not, if it's a learned behavior. I will not buy my child a doll that is made to teach them about breast feeding though when she's only 3 years old.. The halter makes me a little uncomfortable as well :s

  • I guess the public reaction is not surprising given the general reaction to all things breastfeeding, but I don't get it. I guess I am not sure if the pretend nursing bra sounds like a lot of fun to me, but the doll seems harmless. Many of my friends' kids who were 3 or so when they had their 2nd tried to breastfeed their baby dolls.

  • The argument that it will make little girls want to have babies young is absurd.  If this doll does that, then ALL dolls do that...

I see nothing wrong with a doll for breastfeeding. Sure the shirt thing seems a little weird, but it's certainly not sexual!

Also, this doll is from Spain right? Correct me if I'm mistaken, but can't women go topless at the beach in Spain? And breasts can be seen on regular television?  Here in the U.S. boobs are a way different issue than in other places.

If I walked into Toys R Us today, I bet I could find TWENTY dolls (or other "girl" toys) that are wayyyy more troubling to me than this!

This!  I can always count on pretty much ditto-ing everything you say :-)

Why on earth would a parent ever buy a Bratz doll? I'd much much much prefer my daughter want a doll that she can pretend to feed.  As for the nursing tank, meh. I don't think many parents are letting their daughters wear the tanks and just whip them open and nurse their dolls. Why is this looked down upon, when popping a bottle in a baby doll's mouth is a-ok? (rhetorical questions...I know the answer)

  • The doll is NMS (same goes for most dolls), but I dont have any problem with the breastfeeding message, exposing my kids to breastfeeding, or them pretending to breastfeed.  I guess i just dont really see why we need a doll to so specifically reinact it.  I dont see the point of the peeing, eating or bottle drinking dolls either.  What happened to imagination?  do we have to be so directive with children's play?

HUGE DITTO!! I was coming in to say almost exactly the same thing. I lean much more towards the Waldorf approach to dolls (many of which are designed with blank faces specifically so the child can decide if the doll is happy or sad or whatever).

Ditto :) The dolls I had growing up all looked the same and I had to use other toys as "bottles" This doll creeps me out and I wouldn't buy it, nor the Baby Alive doll. They weird me out. I also don't need my daughter trying to breast feed her baby dolls at school/church/restaurants... I had one baby with a bottle and when you turned the bottle upside down the milk "disappeared." I recently discovered it all goes into the nipple.... *embarrassed* lol

Team Brit.  My bff's 5 year old daughter pretends to breastfeeds her dolls.  The funny thing is my bff only breastfed her younger daughter for a short time so her older daughter has picked it up from watching other mothers and friends.  I think it's incredibly natural and love to see that little girl look at breastfeeding in just that way.

Yes, yes, yes!  I do generally agree with TWB and CT about toys that leave more of the play to the children's imagination, but this is the main point I would like to emphasize.  Thanks Brit!  :)

  • I probably wouldn't buy this doll (is it even for sale in the U.S.?) but I think that breastfeeding is the best way to feed babies (if you can do it) and should be promoted as a normal, natural way to feed babies. The halter is a bit odd, but not any more sexual that our social constructs consider breasts to be, which is definitely culturally specific as breasts are primarily for nutrition (biologically). I completely agree with Mrs F and would support my children (regardless of sex/gender) using imaginative play like pretending to nurse a baby doll, anywhere.
