i dont know where else to turn and ill try to make this short- im looking for other possible reasons my son would have such bad blood in his stool. here is some history.. DC1 has food allergies to dairy, egg, and nuts. DC2 has kidney issues, he is 4m old and Im pumping exclusively, he only gets bm with added polycose for calories (per dr) He has been tested for milk/soy by our allergist via bloodwork- both came back negative. He had slight microscopic blood in his stool that our pedi tested while looking for something unrelated- sent us to the ER and long story short we left with the advice for me to be dairy free... no big deal, a week goes by and then he had noticable blood, bright red, in his stool- sometimes its like a "clot" and darker but most of the time its red. Sometimes you think you hear him poop and change his diaper and its ONLY blood

Turns out one of the medications he is on does cause some blood to be present in stool (microscopically) but he has very noticable red blood anywhere from 1-3x a day (its gotten better, but it was every diaper he pooped). No one seems to be rushing to figure things out so in the meantime we say a GI who also recommended I go soy free- ok... a few days after being dairy AND soy free we did see a change but I consider it a fluke because now he still has blood about 1x a day. I know how to watch for soy/dairy so I am 99% Im not eating anything- what else could this be???? GI will likely want to do upper/lower testing soon which I am fine with at this point. He is not a crabby baby, no excema, etc.. I know some soy is likely still in my body (its only been 2wks) but it did get better for a few days and now right back to how it was. We are also mostly top 8 allergy free in the house because of my daughter- and I do not eat eggs or nuts of any kind. Besides food allergies does anyone know what else could this be related to? Im not ready to give up breastfeeding and putting him on formula isnt an option for me because of his kidney issues and my nephrologist agrees to continue bf'ing for as long as I can
Re: lets talk about blood in stool (severe)- not food allergies?
i know this is late..
wow.. i'm so sorry you have to deal with this. i can't imagine how scary and frightening it must be every time you change her to see blood.
I really don't know what else it could be other than dairy/soy. I have a friend who dealt with something similar and when her DD was a few weeks old she discovered her DDs diaper full of blood.. she had to go dairy/soy/egg/nut free.. which you already are so maybe it just needs to clear your system longer.
I would also go through all the ingredients again.. just to make sure you're not missing something. For months my son had these massive two blisters on his head and we couldn't figure out why, then after a few months i noticed one of the foods i was eating had soybean oil in it. It's so easy to miss something..
hope the blood stops and you get some answers! hugs
We had similar issues with the blood in his stool - from about 6 weeks - 7 months, there would be diapers that were totally red looking. I went to a pedi GI who looked at him and recommended that I do the total elimination diet but said keep BFing. It could be something beyond dairy/soy - perhaps wheat/gluten? We were wheat/gluten/dairy/soy/tree nut free for a long time. Perhaps be careful of the tiny hidden particles of dairy that's called something totally different?
We're not going to know for a few years, but my DH and his dad have something called HHT -
HEREDITARY HEMORRHAGIC TELANGIECTASIA or OSLER-WEBER-RENDU Syndrome.
Sorry for the font change. It's a bleeding disorder and we can only assume that DS has it since both of the other men in the family do. As he gets older we'll be doing the genetic testing.
Definitely see a pedi GI.
I know when we first saw our pedi GI for DS's allergies, she told us that if he didn't respond to EleCare/Neocate (since he couldn't tolerate Alimentum/Nutramigen), the only other step after that was to u/s his belly and get x-rays.
I don't know how young it shows up, but I automatically think of Crohns or colitis with those symptoms.
ALSO- our GI told us that blood tests in young infants for allergies aren't accurate until they're older. So I agree with PP that said you need to find a new pedi!
