I am 17 weeks pregnant and am having a little girl. My DH and I already decided that if it was a girl to name her Ruth Anne, but his grandmother recently passed away pretty suddenly. He has asked if we could honor her by naming our baby after her. I agreed since they were very close and then asked if we could honor my grandmother who passed away when I was thirteen by using her middle name. We have to send back some small items with her name on it, but other then that the name change was easy......until we told our families. We thought that they would love the idea, but they complained that we were using only two of our combined four grandmothers. They offered these suggestions:
Don't change her name, we liked it and already bought personalized stuff.
Use the other two grandmother's names in her name also.
Promise to use the other two names next time.
They even went as far as to say that the new name was ugly and didn't sound as good.
Should we listen to them?
Re: Name Change
What is the new name?
Well I don't get how they could think that name is ugly, but Emily is really popular. I think Emily Anne is cute too even though I don't usually care for more common names.
Eileen is pretty cool as a first name too.
You should just choose what you like and stop asking them.

It's your baby. Name her what you want. You reserve the right to change your minds. If you're fine with the sunk costs of the personalized items, that's fine.
As far as only naming her after 2 grandmotthers, are they all deceased? Because if the two you're naming her after are the only two deceased, there's your justification - it's a name in memorium. I wouldn't go giving the kid 4 names. I could see two middle names if you can comine 2 into one, like Stella AnneMarie Elizabeth. Or you can save two, but there's no guarantee you'll have another girl. In the end, you and your husband need to do what feels right, and your opinions are the only two that matter.
ETA: I should have read the whole thread, as you gave the names.
What about RuthAnne Emily Eileen? Emily RuthAnne Eileen? Ruth Anne Emiline (combine Emily and Eileen)?

I think it is really rude (and completely wrong) that they said that the new name is ugly.
I like Ruth Anne best, but Emily Eileen is pretty too.
Bottom line, it is YOUR baby. You and your husband need to decide what you want and ignore everyone else.
me too! This is one of the reasons we aren't going to reveal our name choice. It's really not anyone else's business what you name YOUR child!!!
tritto all of this.
I'm still shocked anyone would buy personalized stuff for you at only 17wks! how long ago did you tell them about the first choice?
Don't listen to them, you and your H are the parents. You have the right to name your child what ever you want. I think that it is nice that you love and care enough about your grandmothers to honor them and use their names.
My grandmother pushed a name so hard when we were preg with DS. It got me really mad. And while I liked the name she wanted (for a MN at least) she pushed so hard that it turned me off.
Go with your heart! You know what you want to name your LO. Politely tell your family that this is going to be her name so get used to it! GL!!
Same here...not a fan of the name Ruth.
Boy, won't they be bent out of shape if it's not even a girl! I'm a first-time grandmother, too...my daughter is almost 16 weeks along, and there's no way on Earth you could talk me into buying anything personalized at this stage of the game.
At only 17 weeks, even if the gender guess was correct, you could change your mind on the baby's name 2 or 3 times between now and the time you give birth. They're being seriously rude and out of line. You name that baby whatever name you like, and don't let their nonsense sway you.
Thinking about this a little more, is it less about the fact that you're using only 2 of the 4 possible grandma names, and maybe a little more about the fact that you're not using one of THEIR names?
