Success after IF

If you BF and did baby sign language, come in!

What did you use for the sign for a milk sippy? DD knows that the regular milk sign means nursing. DH gave her her BM sippy and used the same sign as nursing, and I told him I wanted to use a different sign for sippy cause I didn't want her to get the two confused, but we weren't sure what sign to use.  The 'drink' sign? Something else? What did you do?

  • Reese signed 'more' when she wanted her sippy or food :)

  • What about the sign for cup?

  • We use "drink" for a sippy cup.  It's cupping your hand and making like you're drinking out of a cup.

  • We used the regular milk sign for both. I started using it in connection with nursing very early and then when she started learning signs at school, they used it for milk in sippies. Elizabeth never seemed to care. She'd also use that sign if she saw a bottle of milk in one of her books. Maybe the sign for drink or cup would work?

  • I just use drink for her sippy right now, we haven't introduced milk though. I use eat for nursing/solids b/c we combine them so it was easier for me to just use one sign for both.

  • We just used drink for everything. I never taught him milk because it looks a bit like milking a cow and that's a bit awkward in public.  I'm trying to remember the sign for cup. Maybe you could use that?

  • DD used milk for everything (bottle, BFing, sippy cup) - she just had her own contexts.  She knew that while we were BFing, she would ask me to nurse and ask DH/other caregiver for a bottle/cup.  If you think about how it appears in her mind, it's all food right now.  If DD wanted to nurse for comfort and not for hunger, she just asked for me (if DH had her) or came over to me and wanted up.

Once DD started differentiating different kinds of food and drink, then she cared about the specifics (but she had self-weaned by then).  At that point (14-16 months), she wanted chicken and not green beans, milk and not water, etc.
