Those who have little ones with curly hair

Do you put product in your child's hair?  If so, when did you start and what do you use?

DD has really weird hair right now and I'm wondering if it would be better to put a little product in it.  However, I'm hesitant because I feel like she's too young.  She has this strange mop top that's longer than the back and mostly straight with some wave.  Then the back is real curly and fairly short because of that.  I've tried pulling the top into a ponytail, of sorts, but she usually pulls it out.  Any tips to help get it out of her face and make it look a little better?

  • What are you using to put it up?  we use those tiny little rubber elastics and put them in tight - V can't get them out.  However, bows or barrettes are a lost cause!

I don't know that I'd put product in it yet!

  • We don't use any product. In fact, we still wash her hair wih the all-in-one baby wash we've been using since birth. When it needs taming in the days between washings, we just get it wet with water and scrunch it.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • We don't put product in her hair daily, mostly because i'm too lazy to fix it every day.

We have started using conditioner on her hair now though and that helps tame the curls some. I just use sauve for kids conditioner after her all-in-one body/hair wash. I have once or twice put the same mousse that i use in my  hair if we're going somewhere special. Or you could try to put some lotion, like whatever body lotion you use on her, in her hair. That will tame the curls some too.

I use the little rubber elastic bands to put her hair up. She shouldn't be able to get those out.

Yeah, I don't really *want* to use product, but I can't seem to find anything to tame the mop top.  I've tried the tiny rubber elastics, but I guess I need to put them in tighter.  I'm just afraid that it tugs at her scalp... I remember my mom putting in my elastics so tight that when my hair was let down at the end of the day my scalp hurt.  :/

  • One more thought.... have you tried spray in detangler?  With V's hair it seems to make it a bit straighter when it's conditioned.  Not sure that straighter would help though!

  • With DD I use detangler or a leave in conditioner as her hair is thin, fine and super curly so it easily becomes a rats nests.
  • Little sprouts organics has a curly line for kids. I have a friend that uses it on her kiddo's hair and it's great. the spray is amazing :)

I use the styling stuff for H's hair and it's great. rinses out easy :)

  • I also like the detangler sprays.  We use the J&J one (the one in the turquoise spray bottle) with the leave-in conditioner that goes with it. They work well together. We also use the extra conditioning baby shampoo.  I put DD's hair in pigtails using the snagless elastics.

  • We follow the Curly Girl method for DD's hair. No suds, no 'cones, no combing, no brushing (although when I pull it back I do sometimes brush it into a pony), lots and lots of moisture. I was just given a bottle of Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner and tried it on DD's hair the other night (would have tried it on mine but it came in an order of other new stuff for my hair and I only try 1 new product at once) and I think it's my new favourite for her. Moisture + hold + control = awesome curls. She still looked like Medusa this morning, but I wet her down with DevaCurl's Mist-er Right (lavender glycerin spray) and scrunched her curls back into submission. I've been using product of some kind in her hair since she was about a year old, but since we only use water soluble stuff it's never been a problem to cleanse her hair.

She's had fringe since she was about 18mos, but we're growing it out now. To keep it out of her face I either use a snap clip or two small bobby pins, criss-crossed. If I need it to stay in longer (sometimes I give her cornrows or groupings of slightly larger french braids and leave it for a couple weeks so I don't want her fringe popping out) I'll use a little silicone rubber band to hold the fringe straight back before braiding it into the rest.

The only thing to be concerned about with pulling the hair back is is you do it too tight, too often you can cause permanent bald spots and receding hairline from all the tension. You can make the pony holder as tight as you need, just don't pull the hair itself super tight.
