We dropped out of the Ffx County class at Audrey Moore because DD just couldn't get over the fact that she couldn't touch. I called Parktakes and they said call Audrey Moore to see if they had any suggestions. Sure enough they suggested Providence rec center, like someone said in my other post, they have a "beach" and teach Pee Wee simmers in the shallow end where the kids can touch. Unfortunately there are no evening or weekend classes there. Darn!
We'll just keep going to our neighborhood pool this summer. She absolutely loves just playing and splashing, and will go into the deep end if one of us is with her, but again, we were trying to get her to make motions towards swimming on her own. Seems like the planets are not going to align for me to find a swim class that meets all our criteria: parent not in the pool, in shallow water where she can touch, evening or weekend.
Boo.
Re: F/U to swim lessons and DD #1's fears
FWIW, I didn't really like swimming in water over my head until I was much older than your DD. I think I was taking swim lessons in elementary school to get me into the 5-6 feet end. I still loved the pool and could make sure I didn't drown but I just wasn't comfortable in deeper water.
And - confession - I still have the heebyjeebies in the really deep water. Like if I go off the diving board, I swim as fast as I can to the top and wall.
I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it right now. My DD is only a few months younger than yours and I had to put her in what MoCo/Rockville calls Bubblers (3-5 yr olds). A parent is present and it is to teach kicking, paddling, putting face in the water, etc. I thought she would be ready for the Fearful Floaters (no parent, shallow water, 4-6 yrs old) next, but nope. She will be repeating Bubblers again (for the 3rd time), but has made great strides since last year, so I guess she is just working at her own pace.
I think we just need to realize that they move at their own pace and we can't push them any faster than they want to go.
