Organic bedding?

Ok. So I found this super cute bedding set and I was asking my mom about her thoughts. She mentioned that I might really want to consider the fabrics, fillers and dyes that are used. That got me thinking that she might be right. Maybe the best thing for baby is going with only unbleached and organic fabrics? Boring but definitely gender neutral. Anyone else thinking about going this route?

Nope. IMO, if you go that route then you might as well expect to only clothe your child in organic clothing, because otherwise what is the point? I do have friends who have gone this route, but I just can't see the point since my babies are going to be held by me (and many others) for long periods of time, rubbing up against our clothing that is most likely not organic or unbleached. Oh, on top of that you should probably make sure your own bedding is organic- because a lot of times you will end up brining your baby into bed to nurse, nap etc.

Also, the organic stuff can be a bit rough feeling...not all of it, but a lot of it has a roughness to it. ::shrugs::

I am a big fan of organic fruits, veggies, and dairy, try to buy mostly "clean" meats and poultry (which doesn't always mean organic) and only use safe detergents and cleaning products in our home. I try to focus more of what is going into our bodies. Even then, it can never be perfect. We can just try to do our best and make good decision.

Speaking of that- ladies-- make sure you wash everything before using it (if you can). A lot of clothing and fabrics have formaldehyde in them when you buy them new (for preservation). Ick.

^^ Ditto everything pinksweetpea said. I'd love to do organic everything but it's just not possible. That would mean a whole new wardrobe for me, DH, DS, the baby. All new bedding, towels, etc.

Just make sure you wash everything in a safe detergent. One free of as much junk as you can get. We make our own and have for about 3 years now. I'll never go back to commercial. We either buy "safe" cleaners or make our own. I will admit that I buy those Clorox wipes for spills but that's about it.

It's good that your'e thinking about this kind of stuff though! Lots of people don't always realize how things we buy effect us.

Actually, we have organic bedding and some organic clothes for us- the bedding is something we spend at least 33% of our day in so we decided to go organic and natural with the materials and detergents. We plan to do organic diapers, bedding and at least onsies for our little one and used items when possible. Lots of chemicals do wash out with proper care but when we're thinking about items that will touch us our our baby the most- we will try for the most natural we can afford.

I had all organic bedding for DS and will for this baby. I think it's important to consider what touches their skin for long periods of time when they're very little. There are loads of org bedding in cool prints if you look around online. It's def more expensive but worth it I think. And yes it would be great if newborn clothes were organic too. I think bedding (and mattress if you can afford it) is super important though as they spend most of their time sleeping.

p.s. bamboo is very clean too (for more options)

You can always put an org blanket down if baby sleeps in your bed. As for being up against your clothes - they don't spend as much time there as they do in their own crib sleeping. I think if OP can afford to get some things organic, it's better than nothing. Less exposure to chemicals is always better than more.

I didn't buy a bedding "set" so it wasn't a big deal to buy organic sheets as opposed to non-organic. I do try and buy some organic cotton things for Henry and the whole family as often as possible, but don't stress about it. It's really not that big of a deal to buy organic cotton- why not? Also, there are a ton of companies offering organic options that aren't bland and ugly

One thing we did choose to buy was an organic cotton mattress. I felt like it was a better choice for the baby.

I would like to offer this....children's products are uniquely treated with flame retardants. These chemicals are toxic (and seem pretty silly to me). I think products that are not treated with these chemicals are important.
