My FFFC re: Harry Potter

I am hiding under the bed right now because I know I will get rocks and stones thrown at me.

I never could get into HP

Ever.

It seemed dumb to me - I guess because a relative of mine loved it and I was bothered by her getting on my nerves from it.  That's all she would talk about and she was a bit obsessed.

Never read the books or saw the movies....My husband on occasion would watch it, and I would just roll my eyes because I thought the actors were kind of "nerdy".

What's worse, is that I was totally into the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and didn't have any room for Harry Potter.

I feel like a nerd now.

Goodbye.

  • I picked up HP twice and couldn't get through it.  I did love the Hunger Games.  DH and I plan to take personal days from work to see the movie the day it opens.

So yeah, I saw snippets of the movie(s) now and then and didn't fall in love.  Sue me.

I see we have some die hard HP fans in here.

You can't say you couldn't get into it if you never tried.  Looking at the cover of a book does not equal an attempt.

    These are not flames.

ETA: I've read all the books and loved them.  I've seen snippets of the movies and did not love them.  Liking the books and movies are not mutually exclusive.

  • OMG!!!

    People, please!

You love the movie!  That's wonderful.  Congratulations.

I did not find the half hour here and there of movie watching that enticing.

Again, its a FLAME FREE CONFESSION.  Thanks for respecting my opinion.

  • mmmkay....

slowly walking out of this thread now because I don't feel the need to justify the fact and details that I simply can't get into something so popular in society. Sorry, really, I am.

I am an oddball and I can see how this little post can garner a bit of controversy over my opinion.

    Cough.

  • I loved the books more than the movies but I still watch them out of loyalty.  As the books progressed it does get more "mature" and the movies have followed suit.  Therefore, if you only watched snippets of the earlier movies obviously you would think what you think.  But I agree with the others, your so-called efforts weren't really efforts.  There have been times DH has watched a movie while I was sitting there and I'll watch snippets of it.  I don't think that makes me an expert of whether or not I think it's good or bad.

If you ever do decide to give it an honest go then I suggest reading the books first.

  • Whoa I'm not sure what all the hating is about on here but I totally am not into HP either. I did read the first book (actually forced myself to finish) and thought it was great children's literature, no desire to read any more (yes I do realize there are other more  adult/advanced themes in it but I just couldn't get into it regardless) and I did watch the first movie & maybe part of the second and they were ok but no desire to see anymore. I also don't like Twilight (read the first one of that too), eeeekkk...

I don't think that it is a problem for someone to say they could never get into a book that may just not be their thing, maybe she just doesn't like books & movies about magic & fantasy, even if it was more about someone she knew getting into it? what's the big deal?

Has anyone ever not watched a show or movie b/c they don't like the actor in it or the general type of story (someone who hates law shows, police shows, stupid sitcoms, murder mystery shows, etc....). Saying she HATES HP without knowing anything about it would be different than saying she doesnt think she could ever get into it.

    LIghten up, peeps.  :)

  • Not gonna pick on you for not trying them, I get the whole rebelling against something that everyone else says must be so great but I would ask.  If someone came up to you and said "Yeah I never could get into the whole Lord of the Rings thing, but I haven't read the books and I only saw a few minutes of the movies but I dont like them" what would your response be? I am guessing you would probably say give them a second chance they are actually pretty great stories.

I didn't pick up Harry Potter because, like you I kind of eye-rolled it for a long time, (I think til around the time the 6th book was coming out) since I have been burned a lot when I have read/watched the stuff everybody LOVES and then been really disappointed in the writing.  However once I actually read them I did really get into the books and had to admit the writing was really well done and interesting, especially if you do like the fantasy genre at all.  The movies arent my favorites but the books are pretty great.    Also I think it's one of those things kind of like Star Wars or The Wizard of Oz that sort of defines pop culture for that era and everyone should at least give one chance for the sake of saying they have at least seen/read something that was so defining for that era.

  • I used to hate the Harry Potter hype.  I (like OP) never attempted to get into it because all the HP dorks were annoying.  My thoughts were always: "Really?  You're going to get all worked up about a frickin' book and movie series?!?  How about some reality, you freaks!"

Then, my MIL bought me the first 2 books for Christmas one year, and I thought I should at least try.  I, too, was a huge LOTR fan and realized that they were in the same genre (fantasy).  I LOVED the HP books.  I was proven wrong.

I can definitely see OP's point though.  Besides, she never said she was "attempting" to get into it.

I don't like Harry Potter or LOTR.  I just don't like the fantasy genre.  Never read HP book or saw the movies.  Don't plan to.  DH forced me to watch 2 LOTR movies.  I was looking at my watch the whole time.  To be completely honest, I'm not a big movie person to begin with.

  • I am such a Harry Potter nerd and am currently trying to figure out how I can go watch the new one today :)

But hey to each their own!

  • I find the "I hate HP and will never even give it a chance b/c I'm not a follower" attitude of some far more odd than the people that dress up like characters and wait in lines for hours to see the movies.  Or least far more annoying.
  • I had NO desire to watch any of the HP movies until my DH (then fiance) convinced me to one night. Well after watching the first, I HAD to immediately watch the remaining 3 that were out at that time! Moral of the story is I guess you never know until you try? You did say you watched a little bit, and didn't like it. To each their own I say. Who cares if 100% of the population isn't in LOVE with Harry Potter? Who cares even if you didn't read the books and watched very little of the movies, and still said you didn't think you were into them? I can understand if you were talking about not liking something that you had never read about or watched a movie of, that was actually IMPORTANT. Harry Potter just isn't.

  • I'm not a fantasy lover. My IRL best friend has been trying for YEARS. I've read the Hobbit, meh. Seen large parts of the LOTR movies. Meh. Don't get me started on Twilight, urgh....There's something completely charming and captivating about Harry Potter though. Plus, I unknowingly spent a lot of time at the same cafe in Edinburgh where Rowling first started penning the series.  Must be destiny...

  • I also never really got into Harry Potter, but I have great respect for what it is.  It's Literature with a capital "L."  I haven't read the books in full because I'm just not really into fantasy, but I've read enough to recognize great writing.  If you don't recognize that (or make the mistake of comparing HP to Twilight), you don't know good literature from bad.

  • I have no interest in HP. None, nada, zilch. I won't say I can't get into it because I've never tried. I don't like fantasy and it doesn't interest me. If other people are into it, that's cool for them.

I also can't stand it when you say something like I just did and everyone and their mother harasses you about OMG BUT YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOKS. I can't imagine doing this to anyone about anything else (You don't like watching hockey? OMG  you totally would if you watched MY favorite hockey team!)

  • Hmm....This whole thread got me thinking and reminiscing about a particular Seinfeld episode.

For those of you who may not remember or were a wee bit young back then, Seinfeld was a sitcom comedy that was kind of popular in the 90's.

A particular epi focused on all the hulabaloo of an Academy Award nominated film, The English Patient, that everyone thought was the bees knees except for one of the characters:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B57bOy2Dzjg

I'm not so adamant about HP as Elaine is about The English Patient but I just find myself on the opposite end of the popular masses when it comes to what I think is interesting.

Relax, folks, it's just for a laugh.
