Family Reunion BBQ - Need to Bring and App

(Not an app for an iPad)

I need an appetizer idea. I think the main meal is pulled pork and people have been assigned salads, desserts & appetizers (wish I'd gotten dessert). Anyway - I do have a couple of ideas but the 'hits' that I usually bring are in need of a break. I wondered if anyone had a simple but DELICIOUS idea?!

What do you usually bring, that is a hit?

TIA!

  • Veggie Pizza is a great summer appetizer - you can substitute sour cream for the miracle whip and add/remove any veggies you don't like.  It's seriously hard to step away from it!

  • ONION SOUFFLE (Dip) This is really good and I'm not wild about onions.

    3 - 8 oz. cream cheese, softened

    2 cups grated Parmesan cheese

    1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 1/2 cups finely chopped onion

Mix together.  Bake at 350 for 30 minutes in a shallow baking dish.  Serve warm with bread chunks and crackers.  Makes a large batch.

My whole family loves this. Its pretty easy to make.

This is my favorite! I mix cream cheese with a little bit of sour cream and then the Hidden Valley Ranch packet. Its delicious!

I've only made it a few times because I end up eating most of it!  My BFF makes it for lots of her parties and I always take home the leftovers Embarrassed

One of the ladies made this for my shower last weekend and it was a HUGE hit.  It's really, really good!  Just make sure to cut everything up really small as it'll fall off otherwise.

ETA: I don't know what part of the country you live in, but down here Chips & Queso, homemade guacamole (it's super easy to do) and quality salsa are are staple.  You could also make "Bob Armstrong" dip, which is a mixture of taco meat, guacamole and queso.  It's also really easy to make and is an off menu item at a local restaurant here.  We always put our queso in a mini-crock pot to keep it warm, though the Bob Armstrong recipe often makes enough for a regular sized crock pot.

Here's a recipe for it.  I've never actually made the dip (though I've eaten it several times), but they claim it's from Matt's which is the right restaurant.  One of my girlfriends makes it with bought guac and taco meat made with the McCormick's taco seasoning mix.  It always goes over well.

If you want to make your own guac, you just need fresh avocados, onion, tomatoes, limes, cilantro, jalapenos, salt and pepper (if you're a pepper adder).  I usually make mine in my mocajete, but it also works totally fine in a bowl with a fork.  Take the meat of the avocados and mash it up with a fork.  Add in finely chopped onion and tomato to taste.  Add in lime juice to taste (it both gives flavor and keeps the color correct).  Add in finely chopped cilantro and jalapenos to taste.  Lastly, salt it to taste and add pepper if you like pepper in your guac.

I usually do about a regular sized tomato to 3-4 avocados with about a half of a medium onion.  We like things hot here, so depending on how hot the particular jalapeno is, we'll put 1-2 of them in there, with seeds.  We're not huge on cilantro, so I a small handful is usually plenty.  I like it limey so we use a couple of limes.  I usually use traditional limes, though sometimes I do use key limes for this.  Key limes often taste a bit sweeter.

I just drooled on my keyboard.  These are most of my favorite things wrapped into one!

  • This sounds weird, but these are always a hit at our parties:

    GRAPE JELLY MEATBALLS
2 12 oz jars Heinz chili sauce
1 32 oz jar grape jelly
1 bag meatballs (about 80 in a bag)
Put chili sauce and jelly in a large pot, heat until jelly is melted and sauce is smooth, stirring often. Add frozen meatballs; heat until meatballs are thawed and then simmer for 3 hours.
