What age are you going to introduce it? I will prob water it way down when i start which i figured would be around a yr and a half..just wondering what you are planning. Thanks!!
Probably right before he starts preschool (so just as he turns 3) because I know that they will have it there on some days, but I don't see any reason to introduce it earlier. Right now he's not a kid who loves sweets and I want to keep it that way. Water and milk are perfect IMO
I don't plan to. Sure she'll probably have it at parties or whatever as she gets older, but DH and I both drink water and DD loves it so that works for us.
I've given her one juice box at a party once, and that's the only type of situation I see allowing her to have juice for quite some time, probably until she's 4 or so, and then maybe she can have it with breakfast if everyone else is or something. She's fine drinking water and milk so there is no reason to give her juice.
I haven't given it much thought. He loves water and milk so I see no need to introduce it. I'm sure eventually he'll have some OJ with breakfast or something (DH does, I don't) but not for a while.
ok then i'm not the only mom that is not crazy about giving them juice until preschool. My MIL wants to give it to them now & when i say no she thinks i'm being over protective. I just don't think they need the extra sugar. They love water and they seem to be liking the milk transition. Soooo i'm with you guys. No juice until preschool.
I don't give DD any juice as an actual drink. She gets Milk, water, and on a very rare occasion organic chocolate milk. I do give her some juice, for medicinal purposes. She gets really constipated, always have. She has been drinking watered down prune and pear juice since she was 2 months old to help with it. I don't see me introducing any other juices until she is probably closer to age 5. Until then she gets 2-3 oz of watered down prune or ear juice when she hasn't pooped in a couple of days.
I am not planning on giving my DD juice. She loves water and milk. We don't drink juice in my house. My own personal doctor said juice is pure sugar and not good for kids.
I don't think I really need to "introduce" juice (like we did with WCM or anything.) She just doesn't get it very often. For us, it's more in the category of cookies or ice cream. She's had it occasionally, but it's not part of her standard diet.
Yesterday, she had watered down juice for lunch, b/c that's what came with the kids meal at the pumpkin patch. I also let her have chocolate chip cookies, but I brought a container of veggies for her to eat with her lunch. It's all about moderation!
I think DD1 was around 2-2.5 years when she had orange juice for the first time. We don't buy any other juice at home (and we rarely buy orange juice), so she actually doesn't like most juice even now. She was introduced to juice at daycare, but that was probably around 1.5 years.
I actually don't know if DD2 has had juice yet. She hasn't with us, but she may have occasionally at daycare.

We treat it like we would any sugary food. We buy a container of juice every other month or so when one of us feels like it, and when we have it, I'll put a little bit in his sippy once or twice. I don't see it ever being a regular drink.

It's not something DH or I drink so we don't keep it in the house. Juice isn't a necessary part of the diet and she is happy with milk and water. However, I won't be banning it until a certain age either. If we are at a birthday party and she wants some, she may have some. But it won't be something we readily supply in the house.
Never? We're just not juice drinks, so we never have it in the house. I guess he'll have it if we're out or at school, but we just don't buy it ourselves.

I dont give DD juice. We alos don't drink store-bought juice, but we do love to make smoothies on the weekends (it's so hot here) and we usually make them so we don't throw out any fruits we know we are not going to eat. She LOVES them and we make them with the fruits, water, and ice-no sugar or anything extra. So, she has that maybe twice a month.

I can one up you on the crazy MIL....my MIL tried to tell me that my SIL's doctor said that water was the worst drink out there for kids and they should have juice. I know this is all my MIL because she is BSC and she wanted to give DS juice at 2 months because he was "underweight" according to her (he was 12 lbs at 2 months, yes he only gained 2 lbs from his birthweight but by no means was he underweight). When I told her that I follow my doctor's advice and that he knows best regarding my son's health, she then questioned why my doctor is so against juice. I told her well because all it is is sugar and empty calories. DS can eat his weight in fruit and doesn't need his fruit serving from "juice". She then proceeded to tell me that she told my SIL that my nephew should drink more water because all he drinks (at 5) is juice, chocolate milk and sodas/other sugary drinks (that MIL specifically gives him as SIL doesn't not give soda to him). MIL said it's great that DS only drinks milk and water. This was all during the same conversation. I told you she is BSC and very passive aggressive. I typically only answer her phone calls once per 3-4 months because I can't stand her and her lies.
Oh and daycare does give juice to him but he doesn't drink it. I was going to get the doctor to write a note but I know that he throws the cup back at them and I told them if he does that to give him water so he can have a drink. DS is very finicky and doesn't like any flavors in his drinks. I've tried mixing his powdered vitamin in water and he won't take it because it changes the flavor. I typically end up mixing it with homemade sugar-free applesauce.
Sorry no paragraphs, bumping from my phone.

Do my kids ever drink juice? Yes. But - they mainly drink water & milk. But I'm not anal about them NOT dinking it... Juice is a once and a while kind of thing and I think that's okay.
Edit: Sorry I didn't read the title of the post correctly. However, just to clarifiy, DD#2 has had a few sips here and there but I don't give her a sippy full to drink.
DD#1 has had juice boxes & such, but I'd say she was closer to 2 or 2.5 yrs before we did that. But milk is still her favourite.

You can't simply tell your daycare provider that your child doesn't drink juice and to please only offer him water (or milk) throughout the day? You need a doctor's note to keep them from giving him juice? That's insane.
DS likes to "try" whatever DH and I are drinking, but he refuses to drink anything other than milk or water out of his sippy cups. I don't plan on changing that.

That's because they provide all the food and one cereal days the juice is their "fruit serving". It's been an ongoing issue with others at that daycare but honestly I've had no problems otherwise, plus it's on-site.

We don't drink anything but milk and water so it will probably be a while before DS has it. As far as I am concerned I would prefer he just not have it at all because I don't want him to only want juice and refuse water and milk (my neice did this and it took her a year to start drinking unflavored water again). I haven't decided when we will let him try it though, probably when he starts going to parties and playdates where other kids have it.
Thank you all so much. I think they will only get it when it's a special occasion (if the need even arises). I am with you all. The childhood obesity % is so high nowadays.
Milk & water is all they will be getting . Thanks!

I'm so going to be the odd one out. My DD was FTT for most of her life, so far. So we find ways to push calories any way we can. Since she had a pretty bad milk protein allergy, she's not really used to having just plain milk. She gets two cans of pediasure each day. One is her morning sippy. One is her bottle for bed. Every day I send one pediasure sippy and one juice sippy to daycare with her. Sometimes, especially if she seems a little sick on the tummy, I give her just water, but she doesn't seem to be addicted to the juice. It's always watered down, so that makes me feel a little better about it. At 15 mos she's only 18 lbs. She can use the extra calories!
I don't plan to introduce it until he can ask for it. Right now, he has no idea what it is. But when he does get it, it will be oj with breakfast. He won't be sipping apple juice all day. He can have water if he's thirsty.
DD doesn't get juice on a regular basis, but she has gotten once or twice as a treat. We will continue to do so for the forseeable future. I believe in moderation, not complete exclusion.
I probably will be more apt to give her 100% orange juice on a regular basis when she's pre-school age. Apple juice will probably never happen on a regular basis.
I don't really see that he will ever need juice. I'm sure at some point he will want it, and I will probably let him have it with, say, breakfast, but I don't think my kid will ever be wandering around with a sippy cup full of juice.
I have given DS juice, but it a "shot" of juice with water. We were having serious pooping issues and some colds where the milk just makes things worse. I have never given him a full sippy of juice and don't plan to.
