I'm haivng a scheduled c/s on Tuesday. I know you're not supposed to eat while you're in labor in case of a c/s, and I was told not to eat or drink starting at midnight the night before.
But, what happens if I eat something and then go into labor? Do they wait for my food to digest before doing the c/s? Did this happen to anyone with a repeat c/s?
Re: ? about eating before a c/s (XP)
I think it would depend on your dr (my last dr was a real stickler for the no eating/drinking), what you ate and what was going on with your labor.
Somewhat related, I take a med during pregancy that I can't deliver on, I have to be off of it for 12 hours before. I took it at 8pm, water broke at 1:30 am, they couldn[t do the c/s until 8am. I was having strong, regular contractions, they gave me 3 doses of tributaline to slow the contractions. It wasn't fun.
I'd imagine that is what would happen too.
That made me lol!
I was brought in the night before for observation, I guess they thought something fabulous would happen... ? The nurse that came in in the morning let me eat b/c they were going to hang pitocin and if I went into full blown labor she wanted me fueled up. In the back of my head though that was my thought, what if I had a c-section and puked everywhere? Well I did end up with a c/s about 5 hours after I had breakfast. I felt nauseaus on the table and heaved but I think nothing came up b/c I had a spinal and couldn't feel anything from my chest down, maybe my stomach was numb...
And if you go to a birthing center from what I understand they encourage you to eat to stay nourished, but I know hospitals are different and thats pretty much a standard rule for any surgey so you don't aspirate your vomit and end up with pneumonia.
I had a scheduled c/s and did not eat at all before hand. It was torture but worth it... while in prep they asked me if I had eaten or drank anything and of course I said no. Well, in the "cubicle" next to me they asked the girl the same thing and she admitted to some cereal. They sent her home and rescheduled for Monday (this was a Friday). All I can say is, don't risk it!!!
I'm not planning to eat anything beforehand on purpose. I was just wondering what happens if I go into labor on my own before the scheduled surgery and I have just eatn. Obviously if I'm in full blown labor they're not going to send me home.
Obviously if you are in dire need of an immediate c/s they are not going to wait for your food to digest. The meds will very likely make you sick if you have much food in your system, but no one expects you to starve yourself on the chance that you will go into labor.
Good luck:)
