3rd Trimester

Pre-op examination for c-section

I have a RCS scheduled for July 27th- if I make it that far.

On Monday, July 18th...I have an appointment at my OB for a pre-op examination.

Does anyone know just what this entails?

I should have thought more about it before and I'll call my doctor tomorrow, but I was curious tonight.

I already had a 5 min. talk with the anesthesiologist and go in 2 hours early on the day of the c-section, so I'm just wondering what this will be.....maybe just talking about the procedure?

Re: Pre-op examination for c-section

  • Paperwork...? That's all we did. I go in tomorrow for the surgery.

  • Hmm. Interesting.  My repeat CS has been scheduled for a little while, but my Dr. has made no mention of needing a pre-op visit.  I can't imagine you'd be doing anything but paperwork though.

  • Maybe typical pre-surgery bloodwork and physical exam?

  • I hope it is just paperwork and the simple basics like BP and urine test. That's what I originally thought, but then I started thinking more about it today. Thought it might be blood work and/or internal exams.

  • I was leaning more toward VBAC, but I did have to go in to see my OB (I'm usually with midwives, but they work with him for C-sections) to discuss. We really just talked about everything and I signed a form saying I was aware of the risks involved with VBAC.

    Thank you!! Smile

And to OP, it is my understanding they don't do any internal exams before a Csection, as there isn't much of a point for it... My doctor explained what to expect, when to start fasting, and to wash with a special soap (Hibicleanse). Everything was written down for me too.

  • I didn't have a pre-op appt last time with DD (C-sec #2), and I DID have internals, so I guess that all Dr.s do it differently.

  • I called them today and they said it should just be signing and discussing and directions and then basic appointment things like BP and urine sample and fundal checks.

She didn't think there would be an internal exam since it is for a c-section and there definitely wouldn't be blood work since they wait to do that till the morning of the surgery.
