Can the baby gain weight if I'm not?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but my weight (thankfully) plateaued about 3 or 4 weeks ago.  I haven't been gaining anymore.  I know that this is the time when the baby is supposed to be packing on weight.

If I'm not gaining any weight, can the baby still gain weight?

(Bonus if I could take some of the weight from my thighs and give it to the baby!)

    LOL! Big Smile

I have had many weeks where I have not gained weight, but my fundal height still increased, so yes I think it is possible. Some women do not gain any weight their entire pregnancy (usually if they were over weight).

  • Absolutely. It's also possible to lose weight and still have baby gain. I have gestational diabetes and my diet has caused me to not gain any weight at all since 27 weeks (I'm now 34.5). Despite starting out at 5'4" and 115lbs and only gaining 10lbs so far, baby is still right on track for development and weighing in at a perfectly normal 4lbs as of two weeks ago. :) My doc said not to worry about it at all, your body knows where it needs to pull from in order to nourish the baby.
  • yes its possible. I also haven't gained any weight in the past 3 weeks but I can tell my belly is still getting bigger and my doctor says I'm measuring right on track so he's definitely still growing there. I don't know where its coming from! hha
  • I am a bigger girl so I have actually not gained anything this pregnancy.  I went down about 10 and then up about 8 and Alex is estimated to be between 7 and 8 lbs.  You will be fine!

  • As long as the doctor isn't worried, there's no reason for you to be either. Everyone goes through different phases of weight gain. And it actually IS possible for extra weight (like in your thighs) to get redistributed. I was slightly over my optimal body weight when getting pregnant, lost 10 pounds during the first trimester and have just now gotten back up to my PP weight. That being said, alot of weight has shifted around and I've actually gone down a jean size or two, but both the baby and I are measuring fine. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about!

  • yes, it's possible and not uncommon. at my last appt i had only gained .5lbs in 3 weeks, and the three weeks before that i gained 7 (which freaked me out!) but i just had a growth u/s and baby is right on track and my fundal height was measuring right on.
