Natural Birth

natural birth really safest?

I know many people have varying personal opinions about natural v. an operative delivery, but I was wondering if one is actually considered safer than the other? I was doing some research and found information from physicians that said that through natural birth the baby is able to ingest important bacteria needed to lay down a healthy digestive system, which is very important.  You can check out their answers here, don't want to poorly paraphrase them. What other pros/cons are out there that you've heard?

Re: natural birth really safest?

  • I guess I'm not really understanding your question.  Are you asking whether under normal circumstances (baby looks good, mother looks good) which is safer a vaginal birth or a c/s?  If this is your question then a vaginal birth is the safest for mother and child.

From the ACOG website here are some of the risks associated with c/s for the mother:

    • The uterus, nearby pelvic organs, or skin incision can get infected.
    • You can lose blood, sometimes enough to require a blood transfusion.
    • You can develop blood clots in the legs, pelvic organs, or lungs.
    • Your bowel or bladder can be injured.
    • You can have a reaction to the medications or types of anesthesia that are used.
Here's what the March of Dimes says about risks for the baby:
Anesthesia: Some babies are affected by the drugs given to the mother for anesthesia during surgery. These medications make the woman numb so she can't feel pain. But they may cause the baby to be inactive or sluggish.Breathing problems: Even if they are full-term, babies born by c-section are more likely to have breathing problems than are babies who are delivered vaginally. Also women who have c/s can find breastfeeding to be more of a challenge.  There are times when a c/s is the safest option for mother and baby, but barring any problems a vaginal birth should always be the goal.

How are you defining natural birth? Mentioning just the bacteria makes me think  you are defining as vaginal birth rather than unmedicated or low-intervention in another way.

  • Yes, sorry I am referring to a vaginal birth as opposed to low-intervention type, sorry for the confusion!!
