How old for topless little girls on a beach...or in pics?

While on our trip, we went to the beach with my brother and his family.  My niece (just turned 2 in April) was just wearing bathing suit bottoms but no top, both days.  I got some adorable pics of her, but I'm not sure about posting them on FB and such.  My rule for work is no naked after about 6-9 months and not topless after 18 months.  I just get nervous about what creeps are out there.  That said, SIL specifically asked me to post some pics on FB and send her them and she knew what niece was wearing.  What do you think?

  • Professionally--- I agree with your standards.

I think in the scenario you described it is at the top of end of 'acceptable' for me.

What do I know?  L spent 5 hours at a bbq in his underwear ;)

  • I wouldn't post them but message them to your brother.

This is my thought too.  If they are portraits and not candids you can always watermark them if you want the professional credit.

And I agree with your ages for naked.

  • I am going to upload a ton of pics for everyone to a private gallery.  With how many family members and friends we saw, it will be 100s.  Then I can send everyone the link and tell them to download and do what they want with the pics.

Anything I post on FB almost always has my watermark on it even of my own kids and is low res.  FB terms of service say that they have rights to the images so I try to make it harder on them to use the images...plus you never know who's going to steal your images or something else claiming they are theirs.  It's not impossible no matter what I do, but it's harder.

ETA - Not sure if it matters, but my niece is very big for her age.  She's about DD#1's size or close to it so she looks closer to 3-4, not just turned 2.  Does that make it worse?

  • I think topless is fine long past that age, but I am also close friends with families who are from / vacation in Europe, so I've seen pics of their DD on beaches in Croatia topless for years.  She'll be 6 in a few weeks and it never made me think twice before.

  • That's a good point, Jenni.  I didn't even think of it, but SIL lived in Europe about 10 years ago, so I think that's part of it.  That said, my brother, SIL's daughter and my other brother all asked SIL where niece's top was so it didn't sound like this was a normal occurrence.  Then again, SIL does take niece to the beach often enough without my brother since he works long hours and a lot of weekends and such.  Who knows?
  • I wouldn't think anything of a 2 yo topless. A 2 yo is still a baby. You can always set the privacy settings on FB so only close family can see the pics.

FWIW, DD1 was running around our backyard in just her board shorts last weekend. She wouldn't put on a swimming top, and I figured, she's only 5, so it's not a big deal.
