Anyone use ice cube trays for breast milk storage?

My DCP suggested, to reduce waste, that I should consider switching to milk trays to store the breast milk. A couple moms there use them and she thinks they're easier because she can add an ounce here or there if DD eats more or less throughout the day. I think it's a good idea and she showed me some of the brands the moms use - Baby Fresh, I think was one of them. Anyway, just seeing if anyone uses those instead of the individual storage bags and if they like them.

  • I did with DD, although I haven't with DS.  I just used regular ice cube trays and then stored in a ziplock bag. It was very handy when making cereals when DD started solids and I often used them to supplement bottles if I had a low pumping day.

  • Dear Rome,

I froze a batch in the babyfresh trays. I found the cubes difficult to remove from the trays. Do they make cube lube?  :) They aren't very convenient to warm up, either. Maybe if I kept a crock pot with warm water all the time, I could toss the bottle in for a slow warm. But I can't run warm water over them, like I can with the bags.

That said, I hate the waste of the bags. Then again, H2 doesn't seem to be taking a bottle anyway. Sigh.

     Cube or boob?,

  • I haven't done this yet, but I think something like Baby Cubes would work better than a regular ice cube tray.  Each section pops out and has its own lid, so you could drop it in water to defrost/warm.  I think they make 1 oz and 2 oz sizes.  I was planning to do this with food when the time comes.

  • I haven't, I liked the sterilized bags myself.
