Feeling only slightly guilty...and guilty because of it!

Which I think is just crazy. I had to call in to work today and say I was ill- I live in Kansas and so far we've had weeks of over hundred degree days. Anyway, the air conditioning went out yesterday at my workplace and by the end of the day (at 9 at night!) It was at least 90 degrees in the building. I was overheated and not feeling well at all. They didn't get it fixed before I had to go in today, so I called in sick. I didn't want to faint or get overheated again.

What's sad is that I don't feel all that guilty about calling in - but I feel guilty because I don't feel guilty. This is basically just a rant.

  • Good for you! That doesn't even sound like a healthy environment for you to be in. Enjoy your day off!

  • dont worry we had a bad sunday night so i called my boss at 6am yesterday and told him my power was out id be back in when it was turned back on. I came in about10. but the whole reason i did it was cuz i was to tired and wanted just a little more sleep.. i have a feeling one of these days i will be calling in sick.. but i think  you had a total good reason and should be proud of yoursel for standing up for yourself

  • I wouldn't in the least feel guilty about calling in sick. Your body needs all the rest it can get, and what a perfect excuse! I called in sick today too because we were taking the entire elementary dept to the aquarium today. Having to walk around all day and supervise kids when its hot as an oven outside? No thanks, my bed sounds way better. Listen to what your body wants because now you have a legitimate reason.

  • Don't feel guilty. Especially about not feeling guilty "enough". You did the medically responsible thing for both you and your baby, and you should be proud that you were able to make a tough call about something important.

  • I'm in Kansas too and this weather has just been awful. I would have called in sick too if the AC was out at my work. We have a lot of windows in the area where I sit and they keep those blinds shut all day and I still get pretty warm in the afternoon.
  • Yeah definitely no guilt required on your part!  What's more, I wouldn't want to have to waste a sick day on that.  It is not a safe work environment due to factors out of your control and you should have been given a "free" day off.

  • Don't feel guilty, it's a perfectly good reason to take off, you're concerned about your health and the baby's.  However, if you don't think it's a great reason, I wouldn't post about it on the internet or your boss might find out anyway.  Oops. :)

  • Well, you probably would have gotten sick if you'd gone in! Pre-emptive sick day.

My company used to have "personal days" that you could use for doctor's appts and whatnot ... that way, you didn't have to lie about being "sick." This would have been a perfect time to just take a personal day. :)
