I started with rice cereal 1x per day (at dinner time) for about a week, then added in a feeding at breakfast. I did that for another week then added in veggies, then alternated fruits/veggies every 2-3 days. After about a month I added a 3rd meal, so by 7 months she was getting 3 'meals' a day, usually oatmeal w/fruit for bfast, a combo at lunch, and a veggie at dinner + her bottles. I also added in finger foods at 7 mths (puffs, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheerios).

I made my own food. We started with carrots (just steamed and pureed) and then next did bananas and sweet potato. We waited about a week between new foods and once she had done ok with them we started mixing them.
Our pedi suggested doing veggies first but other than that he said do whatever we wanted (and whatever worked for DD)
We were on a 3 hour bottle rotation so I didn't want to mess with that. So if the boys appeared to be hungry after a bottle, I would offer up some solids. It was pretty loose until we went to 3 meals a day at 8 months.

We're doing baby led weaning and at least in the beginning skipping all purees and going straight to little chunks/mashes. Her first food will be avocado followed by banana. Even if we weren't doing this we would be skipping cereals. Anna is also 7 mos and still hasnt gotten solids because of her cast. If she can sit up when she comes out of it we'll start this week.

We started with pureed sweet potatoes. He wouldn't eat anything but purees at all in the beginning. Gagged on anything with texture like a big drama queen. lol. I waited 3-4 days in between foods but didn't care whether it was fruits or veggies. You can do a combination of things as soon as he/she has had each of the foods you want to combine without a reaction.

I didn't follow any rules, really. I used the wholesomebabyfoods website as a guide. We tried avocado, banana & sweet potato early. We also went right to Earth's Best Brown Rice Cereal. I intermixed fruits with veggies and she loves both equally today and never gave me trouble going back and forth. I don't think I ever really bought stage 1.

Rice cereal, then fruits, then orange veggies.
