Working Moms

Did anyone go from SAHM to working mom?

My husband and I originally planned on having our kids 2 years apart.  However he just accepted a job in California that is probably going to force us to wait a little longer to have our second.  I initially decided not to go back to work because my husband works long hours and I would have needed to as well.  I am seriously considering trying to get a job (public accounting) when we get out there for 3-4 days a week.  I am just worried if we go out there and I don't get a job I am going to end up feeling very down.  My entire family is here and I see them 3-4 times a week.  I guess I am just wondering if anyone went back to work how they felt about leaving a 1 yr old as opposed to being home with them.

  • from the posts I've read on here, most moms would ideally like to work 3-4 days a week rather than stay at home or work full time.  That would be my perfect situation.

  • I SAH for 14 mo's and then went back to work.  For me I had always planned on working but I lost my job after maternity leave and DH was changing jobs so I enjoyed the severence and stayed home until I could find the right job.  In my industry, it's full time or nothing so part time was not an option.  Part time would have been ideal to me.  Now we are also moving out of state next month and I plan on quitting my job and starting a business I have been working on and just teaching some aerobics classes and doing some public speaking on health/exercise.  I plan to continue working, but more for myself so I can set my own hours but it will obviously take time to build income.   I think part time is ideal.  The benefits of working for my son were

he loved daycare and loved the social side of it

he learned early how to share and be comfortable around other people

we met others with kids the same age...that may be nice since you will be new to the area

Where in ca are you moving too? I am in public accounting and my firm allows you to work part time.

I work 3 days a week. While I don't love my job, I love the schedule. It's the best of both worlds.

My company has a location in sf. It's one if the big 4, let me know if you are interested and I can always submit your resume. Also, I have a lot of connections if you are looking for a job internal ( not public accounting). The one thing u probably already know are the hours are rough out here in public accounting! Also day care isn't ceap as well. Most daycares run from 1500 - 2200 a month. let me know if u want more info!!! I can give u my email address.

I really appreciate that but if I go back I will probably look for something outside of the city.  I just wouldn't want a long commute.  I can always go back to E&Y I'm sure especially since that's where my husband works also.  I just don't know if I want to go back to the big 4.

  • Good luck!!! Public accounting and being a new mommy don't mix well!!! It sucks!!!
  • I stayed home wth DS until he was about 17 months.  I actually started looking for a job/applying/interviewing when he was about 10 months.  It took me quite a while to find a perfect match...job in my field, part-time with set hours, and offered benefits.  My husband works in car sales (i.e. unpredictible hours) and we have no family in the area, so I needed a job that I could guarantee what my schedule would be so I could pick DS up from DC.  Like I said, it took a while, but I did find the perfect job for me...I work M-W-F full days (24 hours per week).  For us, the time that I went back was really the best decision I could have made.  I had always taken him to a lot of activities, playdates, etc., but he just blossomed at daycare.  The socialization has been wonderful for him...and me.  Working PT gives me back something for myself that I enjoy doing, but I also get to have days off during the week that I can do all of the fun activities with him.  I don't have 2 days in a row of the same thing and that works for us.  Of course, initially, there was mommy guilt for being away from him, but I think that is going to be there at first no matter what age they go to DC.  However, the key is finding a great provider that loves your child, enjoys taking care of them and makes you feel confident in leaving him/her there every time you do.  That is just so important.
