Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If you use a straw sippy

Does your LO suck the water or whatever up and then open his/her mouth and let it all fall out?  I think she probably swallows like a quarter of what she actually sucks up.  It's really messy and I don't want to put BM or CM or even juice in it until she stops doing this!  We've been using the straw sippy since she was about 6.5 months old and she started sucking right away but has always done this.  I really would have thought she would have figured it out better by now.

I'm just wondering if my DD is the only one doing this and if I should just give up on the straw sippy.

We use the Playtex twist and click starter straw sippy.

Re: If you use a straw sippy

  • DD did this until I figured out that the spill-proof function wasnt allowing her to drink properly. I tried it myself apperantly you have to suck really hard to get the liquid out. So when LO actually sucked hard enough she'd let it all fall out.

I grabbed a pair of scissors and cut a tiny opening in the part that allows slip-proof and now she drinks like a champ.

We use the Nuby Flip-It Sport Sipper Straw Sippy Cup and LOVE it. I love that the straw goes all the way down to the bottom of the cup too. I think it makes it easier for LO to get it when we dont have a Sippy and just use a pain 'ol straw.

  • DD did the same thing with the playtex starter, I assumed it was because she got too much and didn't know what to do with it all, so she spit it out. I tried the Tommee Tippee ones with the wide straw and built-in valve and she didn't do it anymore.

  • Thanks for the recommendations!  I'll give these cups a try.  I don't know what part of the Playtex straw makes it so hart to suck but it is annoying that it doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the cup.

Also, the straw is already stained from the other food she eats while she's drinking it!  Does anyone else have that problem?  Hopefully we won't have that problem with these other cups.
