Success after IF

has anyone weaned from the paci really early?

Eleanor no longer needs/wants her paci except when she goes to sleep. And then it's a long frustrating game in which she spits it out, then cries for it, then I replace it, then she spits it out again, over and over until she finally falls asleep.

It no longer seems helpful, just annoying, and I'm thinking about just getting rid of it in about a month. I know it will cause some crying at first, but I know she'll adjust quickly.

Then again, it sort of seems cruel to take it from her at this point, even though she's not crazy attached to it.

Thoughts?

  • We didn't do this, but I definitely think I would if were causing that much grief.

Hannah is a thumb sucker, but we took the pacifier from Marshall at 18 months...he only used it for naps and nighttime, and I wanted to ditch it before he developed a word for it!

  • E only used one for a few months. He wasn't as interested so I just stopped giving it to him. H, on the other hand...I should have done what sara1014 did, she now calls it her Ba-Ba and must have it all.the.time. I am terrified of weaning her from it.

Yep, DDs lost interest in pacis somewhere between 4 and 6 months.  I'm very happy we got rid of them then since it hasn't been an issue since.  I think it's a lot easier to get rid of something like that when they are young instead or 2 or so.

  • theo always did the same thing with his pacifier. basically the only way he could use it was for me to hold it in his mouth, he just thrusts when he sucks so it would just keep flying out of his mouth. i stopped offering it because it was more trouble than it was worth. he was a handful to get to go to sleep until about 4 1/2 months and taking away the paci made NO difference.

  • No, but I wish I had.  I wish I had done it when we Ferbered...and I probably will with Parker.  Caroline is super addicted, and has to have three in her bed at all times.

She only gets the paci in her crib now, but she asks for it constantly.

I'd go for it, if you think it'll fly...

Pretty much this.  We dropped it only a few weeks after he came home from the NICU (so around 1 - 2 months adjusted)  I say go for it!

  • go for it!  I've got a super binky addict in my house and I'm so nervous about weaning him.  Next week we are going to start the process...ugh.  Hoping to get down to just sleepy time and special usage (ie car trips/public meltdowns) after a few months.
  • I was just reading about this in my Baby 411 book. So far Briggs only uses his for sleeping too, and it's quite a production because he sucks so vigorously that it falls out constantly and I'm always trying to put it back in so he'll calm down and go to sleep. That being said, the book says to absolutely wean between 4-6 months, so that's what I intend to do. Easier said than done, I know.

This was true for us as well. It really seemed to be more trouble than it was worth and he wasn't that attached to it, so I just stopped giving it to him. He really didn't notice a difference, nor did I at that age! :)

  • Brady basically lost interest around 3 months old.  We just stopped offering it.  I thought for a while he was going to take up thumb sucking, but that didn't stick, either.  Really, I don't remember it being an issue for us.  LIke others have said, I was glad he lost interest on his own so we didn't have to actually take it away later.
  • My DS only took his paci for 3 weeks max.  We realized he only really wanted it when he was actually hungry.  Otherwise he would just spit it out.  He never just sucked on it to suck on it.  So we just stopped giving it to him.  He never seemed fazed by it.  And now I don't have to worry about taking it away from him now!
