Long prodromal labor

Do you think it is better to have a long prodromal labor vs dilating/effacing in just a few days?

I dilated to almost 6 cms and was completely effaced without "being in labor"  but had a csection.  I was miserable, having contractions and back pain all the times, besides the fact that it doesn't feel very comfortable to be so open down there.

But I am getting really sick of hearing how "lucky" I am to not have had to go through labor.

Re: Long prodromal labor

  • I've talked to many different women about the whole vaginal delivery vs c-section delivery.

I had a 22 hour labour, progressed very slow in the beginning (induction) and then fast at the end. My sister had an emergency c-section when she went into pre-term labour, different situation, but she still had a section. I would HATE to have to go through the recovery that she is going through. She can't even pick up my daughter whenever she comes to visit because of the section. She has to sit down and then I have to hand her to her, because she's over my sisters limit of what she should be lifting.

Regardless of what type of labour you have, it's painful, and there is a recovery period. I don't think one is "easier" than the other.

  • There was some talk recently on the cloth diapering board about having a c-section board, and this is one reason I think it's a good idea. I was lucky enough to have a complication-free natural birth, and I can honestly say I never think about it. My sister had an emergency c-section two years ago, and still thinks of it often - what might have been different, what was worse, how she wants it to be next time. I think the reason I don't think about my son's birth and she does is that for me it went pretty much the way it was "supposed to." I think sometimes women who have c-sections for medical reasons are bound to wonder what WOULD have happened or what it WOULD have felt like because it seems like on some level there was an alternative. You need to do that, and probably with people who understand where you are at, it's normal to wonder. But for all of us, it happened the way it happened, nothing is better or worse, and in the end, our babies are here and healthy. It's kind of like a wedding - it might have been big and fancy and covered in magazines or you might have eloped - either way you're married.

  • I had a 29 hour labor followed by an emergency c-section. I didn't think the surgery recovery was bad at all and honestly I'm just so very thankful that they had put an internal monitor, caught that his heart rate fell so low and wasn't going back up, that my Ob was in the room when his heart rate crashed, that we have the medical advancement that allows for c-sections, and that there are cat scans in the hospital so that they didn't have to do additional exploritory surgery to check on my kidneys, bladder, and uterers. I agree a c-section board would be so helpful. While I went in wanting a natural experience, if it hadn't been for a tons of medical interventions not only would my son probably not be alive, but I might not give how he was completely wedged.
